True Life: I'm homeschooled

It's on right now (MTV), central time zone. Thought you all might find it interesting. If you don't catch it, I'm sure they'll replay 1000x

Half-way through - not liking it so far. One girl is rethinking her whole homeschooling decision because she wasn't prepared for the SAT (she did very badly). One boy is checking out high schools and is trying to present an argument to his mom about why he should go. And the other boy's homeschool football team loses all the time and he feels he won't get into college to play football.

So far, homeschooling looks really crappy. I was emailed to be on this episode and I'm glad I turned it down. Then again, maybe we would have made it look really awesome. They needed high schoolers, though.

I watched it. The first 1/2 made me think... ok here we go, they're going to make hsing look bad. But in the end 1 was undecided about moving to school for sports (though loved being home), 1 tried school and returned home, and 1 went to college early. All of those outcomes seemed to work for me ~ not that it matters... none of those are my family. BUT I love, love, love that my dh happened into the room during the segment where the one boy was attending a class in public school, completely bored out of his mind. =) We've been having a lot of conversations about what should happen in out house next year (since we make the decision yr to yr). Helps some of my argument =)

I'm glad they brought up dual-enrollment. So many people think it's all or nothing and don't realize there are other options out there. I'm really surprised the Christian football player didn't opt for this (or even consider this, it seemed). You can go out for sports even if you're just dual-enrolled as opposed to fully enrolled in school, right?

The one girl seemed to have a horrible set up. Some people are just not self starters (nothing wrong with that) and it didn't seem like her parents were really involved in her homeschooling much beyond what asking what courses she was taking and reminding her to do her work, but not following through on it.

While I really hope to homeschool my kids, if we get to the point where they say "Mom, I'm not learning anything", things would drastically change. If that meant public school, then public school it is.

I think dual enrollment for public schools varies by state. I would love to one day have that option, definitely seems like the best of both worlds for highschool. But, I don't believe that's an option where I live.

And yes, I would definitely be concerned that our plan wasn't working if my child wasn't learning... for whatever reason. We would have to re-evaluate and formulate a new plan. Seems as though the daughter did though, applying for early entry to school. I thought it was pretty self motivated to make every effort to change the situation for herself.
