My 4 year old has been on Neocate since his first birthday - it's his sole source of nutrition.  When we started him on it, we thought he was reacting also (vomiting, screaming in pain, etc.) and I begged them to switch him to something else.  After about 4 months, his system calmed down and he was a new kid.  I don't think it's common to happen like that, but maybe your child just needs more time on the elemental formula like mine did?

I just started on my soy quest... and the information I had been reading, I see -- after doing more reading -- had been a little "off", good but "off" and what you have pointed out here was one of few little things I there for was "off" about, but yes, you are very right. Thank you for pointing it out. I just find it really, really funny I had found this out TODAY. The way it was had been explained to me was that the sitting point tofu goes though was a low grade fermentation, but this is, well, wrong.

Coconut milk tonic

1 can coconut milk (organic with no thickeners, not all brands are safe)

1 can coconut juice

1 tsp organic vanilla (optional, you need to know what alcohol is the base if you are sensitive to wheat/corn/rye, make your own)

1 tsp dolomite powder (good source of calcium)

This sounds really yummy to my prego tummy, but I want to freeze it and then blend it, lol. My only thoughts about making it  is one might try to find something like http://www.kalyx.com/store/proddetail.cfm/ItemID/989917/CategoryID/12500/SubCatID/255/file.htm or is glycerin a common no, no? If so never mind. Also, I have heard about passable lead poisoning from dolomite, but I a) guess that comes as a risk when eating rocks :-P and b) I wonder what others have heard/ know about it.

[I seem to have had a childhood "avoidance" of milk or so my mother puts it. duh.gif I know now I have milk problems: I can have some cheese if I wanted to with little to no problem, more when I am without a baby inside, but not milk -- always very odd to me. I wish my mom had picked up on this one though in her infinite wisdom, is constantly telling me I need more calcium (which is probably right), and has been telling me since I was 10yo. So, my "avoidance" in combination with my more or less new vegan life, about a year now, and being prego leaves me looking for good source of getting extra calcium. I was thinking it might also help with me still having a war on cheese -- why is it so yummy?!?]

I am really enjoying all I am learning! Thanks mamas!

I go through spurts where I have more trouble with dairy than others, but like you, most of the time cheese is safe.  Right now I'm at a point where I can only have a little or have tummy troubles.  Many adults do lose their ability to digest lactose (especially Asian, Native American, Indian, etc) throughout their life, biologically we really are only made to digest milk during our first 5 years or so.  Sometimes you can jump start your enzyme production by eating more dairy, at first you'll be uncomfortable, but then your body realizes it needs to product more and responds (very much like the nursing baby who goes on a growth spurt, the milk responds it just takes a day or so).

As for the dolomite, I'm sure there are some that are contaminated.  Isn't that the way with everything?  Nourishing Traditions only recommends this one:

My kid has pretty bad eczema over his face and body. I can't really just sit around and see whether time will time... Its kinda hard seeing your kid suffer day and night, not knowing what you can do exacty. Docs just keep telling me he'll out grow it but nothing to do immediately.

I'm sorry.. but if your kid is screaming and writhing in pain, something needs to be done. Please don't suggest that it's ok to make your child suffer for 4 months like that. greensad.gif It only takes about 1-2 weeks for foods to clear your system (with the exception of gluten, which takes longer), so if you're reacting longer than that after changing the diet, you're reacting to something on your current diet (meaning he was reacting to that formula.) Maybe he outgrew the allergy, maybe his symptoms changed to something more subtle. Who knows. But allowing the body to be under that kind of stress, not to mention the inflammation from an allergic reaction, for that length of time is a bad bad idea. If your doctor refuses to listen to you and change the prescription (I'm just assuming the hesitation to switch was due to insurance coverage, and needing approval from a doctor), then you find a new doctor. Just out of curiosity- were you doing meds at the same time as the formula? I'm wondering why he would have that much of an issue with it, and then suddenly none at all.

I agree. I'm just at the point where theres no other formulas to try that I could think of/find which can help my DS current situation. I'm almost positive it is the formula because of his already limited diet. Given enough time he will react to the new formula. Currently using hydrocortison 2x week to try and keep the inflammation undercontrol until we can wean off formula and onto solids.

It may take only 1-2 weeks for food to leave your body, but it can take a lot longer than that to heal internally.  We traveled to one of the best doctors/clinics in the country for what my son deals with and they said it happens sometimes. My son was not internally healed after 3 months on the formula - he was a ton better, but not healed.  Was that why he was screaming still?  It could be.  It could have been a concentration issue also.  Some kids just can't handle elemental formulas at full strength and perhaps that was my son's problem and eventually his body got used to it.

You may say it's impossible, but I can't even begin to tell you how many parents have posted that their child was failing a formula and they had no other options - a few weeks later, they come back singing the praises of the formula.

What's the percentage... something like 99.8% of kids will tolerate one of the elemental formulas.  If your child is really in the 0.2%, you probably have more things going on that typical issues (allergy, eos, etc.) and you should seek additional testing.  Even the most extreme Eos kids can handle elemental formula, but the ones that can't are usually later diagnosed with Mito issues and they end up on TPN with a central line.
