Reading by 5? - Page 2

I seriously think all kids are different. Tyr (3) has had a love of letters and words for over a year now...So this has helped him tremendously...I know he can read many words now (by sight) and sounds out others. He is always asking me how to spell words or asking what various things say. My nieces are 4 and 6-(7 next month) The oldest in K (it was a K/G1 mix) last year learned how to read and is advancing well now in G-1. Her sister at 4 now knows her letters and how to spell a few small words...she has big sis to learn from.

Are you kidding me? DD1 is going to be 5 in March and is nowhere near reading. She's in preschool and will be going to kindergarten in the fall, which is when I would think more kids will be learning basic words.

Maybe they misunderstood each other somehow.

My daughter could read a little before kindergarten. She could write words, read, sound things out. Brilliant huh?

But, somehow, she REALLLLLLY struggled in reading, spelling, grammer, all the things she should have excelled in. She's 17 now, and still struggles a little with grammer and spelling.

You know what she's amazing at????? Math, science and music. I have absolutely no skill in any of those subjects. I would probably fail a third grade math test.

did she recognize her alphabets early? did she know simple words early? if those were her learning trends then perhaps the ped. feels she should be reading by now. perhaps he meant look out for vision or learning problems.

but i cant ever imagine a ped saying a child should be reading Hop on Pops at 5. even for someone who started K in Fall 09.

Print out these posts and give them to your friend.

A doctor is useful for medical information and assistance. Not childhood developement. Unless the doctor is a child psychologist or is also a friend of yours with children the same age whose advice you value. That's where I go for child developement opinions.

My DS just had a 5 year checkup - which was weight, height, look in ears and throat, an eye chart (with pictures, not letters), and asked if we had anything to add. The ONLY question of his developement was when the doctor asked "can you stand on one foot?"

I bet you that doctor's kid read Hop on Pop around his/her 5th birthday. That's all it means, I bet. Really, even pediatricians spend very little time studying milestones like language develeopment, much less family physicians.
