Furnace replacement assistance for family with no income.

We're a family of four (two small children) living in NW Indiana (think Chicago weather). My husband is unemployed, his unemployment is on hold, and we have no income (unless you count foodstamps).

Our boiler (furnace) is broke beyond repair and we need a new one. The cost for a new boiler with installation is in the 5-6k dollar range. (And it would be even more to convert to forced air because we don't have the duct work for it).

Does anyone know of any agencies that may be able to help? We're heating our house with space heaters right now (our smoke detectors work and we're being as safe as possible about using them).

I will be calling weatherization first thing in the morning to see if they can do an emergency boiler replacement. The township trustee said they can't help because a furnace/boiler is considered a home improvement. We live in a small town and the churches can help with small monetary donations.

Thank you!

Our Habitat for Humanity chapter has begun doing renovations for qualified homeowners since they are no longer getting the same donations of land for new homes.

Do you have a chapter nearby? if they don't do it themselves, they probably know who to contact.

There is a nearby chapter. I will contact them tomorrow. Thank you, I otherwise would not have considered Habitat for Humanity.

I know our weatherization will do an energy audit and has replaced furnaces for people. We have to get ahold of them this week. Our home is horribly insulated, and will be warm in the center of the house, but freezing near the exterior walls. :/

I know weatherization does energy audits and will replace inefficient furnaces. The question is, will they do it on an emergency basis. I've been on their waiting list for two years! I will be calling first thing in the morning.
