Nursing Swimsuit-Worth It or Not?

My baby and I are going to start parent/child swim classes soon, so I need to buy a swimsuit that fits me. Is a nursing swimsuit worth it or not? The swim class is 45 minutes long. We don't live near an ocean, so it's not like we're going to be sitting in our swimsuiits for hours (other than occasional vacations). What do you guys think?

I don't think they're necessary, I can usually just slide down a strap on my regular swimsuit if DD needs to nurse, but she is usually having so much fun in the water or watching all the other kids in the water that she's too busy to nurse!

I wouldn't bother.

I found that any "nursing swimsuits" were so tight-fitting that it was really not convenient at all to nurse (the double-layer, lift-the top-layer-to-nurse type, I mean.) I'm not into the drop-cup style at all. I just wore a "tankini" style top that was slightly blouse-y, just pulled it up to nurse no problem. Not worth the money for a special suit, I think.

I'd also check out the policy of your pool. Our does not allow breastfeeding (or any other food/drink) in the pool area. Since I had to go to the changing rooms anyway I was OK with my normal suit.

Just as an FYI for future people reading this thread, I'm pretty sure it is illegal for a pool to "not allow" breastfeeding.  I guess it depends on what the state/city ordinances are about it, but most states/cities have special protections in place specifically to allow a mother to breastfeed anywhere she is normally legally allowed to be, which would include swimming pools.

I just posted about this in another thread, but I have a Motherwear tankini and it is totally not worth the bother. The nursing panels close with teeny tiny metal snaps which are hard to open and impossible to close one-handed, the slit is too small and the snaps are sewn on poorly to boot. I find myself wearing my regular Land's End tank suit all the time instead, and I live in Hawaii so we wear suits a lot.

I was wondering about that too. But I can see 2 sides here..Breast feeding moms are technically allowed to nurse basically anywhere, and I'd think that would include pools, too at first. But then I thought about their "no food or drink" rule.

We always use the argument that a baby should be able to eat where everyone else eats and share the same rights. "You wouldnt want to eat your lunch in the bathroom, why should a baby have to?" is commonly used. So I actually can see how that rule should work both ways. If babies can eat anywhere that we can, then they may also need to be restricted in the same areas that we are. In the same sense that we may say "why can you eat here in the open but my baby has to go somewhere else?" others can also say "why can that baby eat his lunch here when I have to go somewhere else?"

I understand that the needs of nursing babies differ from others, I'm just saying there may be a reason why the pools have that rule. Breast milk is food, after all.
