mismatched scraps

I don't mean colors, but yarn types. I've got a ton of scraps. Some wool, some super wash, some cotton, acrylic, nylon. What can I do with all of these? Besides wrap mboys!

This seems like a LOT of work- but MMNN made hers into balls of handknotted yarn. I was a lucky recipient of one and a hat knitted of the same and they are really a sight to behold!

Little bits and pieces you don't like could be used for stuffing toys. If it was the same weight, you could make toys (elephante on rav is so cute!)

Donate to charities that knit/crochet.

Wool could be spit spliced together to make a wild and beautiful soaker/hat/mittens/oven mitt.

In one of yarn harlot's book, she suggests a garter stitch blanket - one row out of every yarn you've ever used. Could be AWESOME or ugly.

Save some for teaching your dc.

by scraps, how much do you mean? If it is enough, you could make preemie hats/booties to donate to your local NICU

Don;t know if you have toddlers/preschoolers but I've read that yarn scraps and sandpaper make a good felt board type toy. I haven;t tried it yet but sandpaper is now on my shopping list for this week.

There is a nice pattern on Ravely for a 10 stitch blanket. I've made a couple of doll sized ones with my scraps and it's been pretty forgiving. I did find the yarns needed to be fairly similar i thickness and I haven't needed to wash them yet.

how much do you mean by "scraps"? if they're at least a few yards each, you could do a funky scarf. Just cast on 20-40 stitches (depending on how wide you want the scarf) and knit in garter stitch, changing yarns as you use them up. I've seen scarves like these at artist's fairs and they are lovely (and sell for obscene amounts of money, LOL!)

I tried to search for a pic- but she deleted them I guess. I will try to take a pic of mine and post later.

I just made these with my tiny scrappy balls: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Bean...skirted-soaker

All the wool is different weights and brands and I'm pretty keen on how they came out.

I'm making a scarf like that. I wasn't sure about leaving the tails out but maybe I will now.

What I did is keep all the pieces of yarn I would have thrown away! I just tied them together and started wrapping a ball.

I only work on the scarf when the ball gets big enough to knit for awhile. I just love that it's knit from stuff I would have put in the trash.

(I'm talking about 6" pieces and longer.)

I keep little ends for stuffing toys I crochet. I knitted 2 "toy" dog blankets for my daughters out of scraps - different types & weights. I love love the wool longies from beanymama ... but I don't really have enough leftover wool for a diaper cover.

I'm teaching DD1 to crochet granny squares - in hopes that maybe we could make blankets to donate to the hospital, using leftovers.
