"Do any kids go to school anymore?"

I was on the phone with my mother, and she said "I have a question. Are there any kids who go to school anymore?"

Huh? I replied.

"Well I'm getting back into knitting, and really that translates into me spending all day checking out different crafty blogs, and it seems like every single blog I come across there are 5 cute kids all wearing beautiful hand-made clothes and they're all homeschooled. So now I'm beginning to wonder if there are any kids who go to school anymore."

I just thought it was kind of funny. There does seem to be a correlation between crafty blogs and moms who homeschool. Which, to be totally honest, I can't for the life of me figure out... so far as I'm concerned, the #1 reason I would actually send my kids to school is so that I actually have enough time to be crafty! Where do these people come up with the TIME!? (rhetorical question technically, but if you have the answer, I'd love to know...)

I've heard the same thing about homesteading moms. "It seems that if I come across a blog with goats and young children, the kids are homeschooled."

My goats and my unschooling (and my craftiness) aren't really related, but there you have it.

When I was homeschooling my two daughters, 12 and 13/14 at the time, the three of us had lots of time to do crafts projects together! Even if my son (then 7) had been out of school, I'm sure we could have done crafty things while DS played with his cars or maybe made some crochet chains with his fingers.

You'll probably notice that the crafty moms who blog don't exclusively have 3yos and babies! They might have little ones at home, but if they also have big ones, the big ones help with the little ones long enough to crochet something- or, at the very least, the big kids knit and crochet and the mom steals a few minutes to blog about her kids' accomplishments!

I wonder how many homeschooled goats are crocheting?

That is a good point. I don't know how they manage to take up so much time (if you actually asked me to account for it, I probably wouldn't be able to) but they certainly seem to! The problem is they're happy so long as I'm moving... the second I sit down, they want to climb all over me and my toddler begs for a story, a snack, a hug, etc. I guess I could learn how to knit while dancing around the living room, but it seems like the yarn would get tangled.
