Failed the 1-hour glucose test pretty spectacularly

So, yeah. I failed the 1-hour before with my DD and then passed the 3-hour. I wasn't shocked to fail this 1-hour, but apparently I failed it pretty badly with a score of 200. I'm hoping someone else out there has failed just as miserably yet went on to pass the 3-hour? I'm taking it tomorrow and just looking for some hope...

OK, I failed them all... but I just wanted to offer some support all. (Had GD through all three pregnancies.. .insulin...whole shebang (although managed with glyburide (no needles) last two). All babies were born vaginally... and just fine. (Although all the babies had slight jaundice... not enough to need a biliblanket or anything... which had nothing to do with the diabetes.)

Eat a high protein/fat breakfast before your test.

You're probably taking your three hour at a lab...and they will probably not want you to walk around... but walk around if you can.

And in the unlikely even you do fail again, and insulin is mentioned (often if your numbers are super high, they don't even bother to try with diet alone), talk to your perinatologist or OB about the possibility of using glyburide instead of insulin. (Although I do have to say that insulin was not as bad as I thought. It took me probably 20 minutes to psych myself up to inject my thigh in the nurse educator's office... but once I did.. it was nothing. Thank G-d for fat thighs )

If you need to buy a monitor or syringes, go for the highest number (gauge) you can for your lancet device and needles. High=thin. BD makes 33 gauge lancets. Called Ultra-Fine!

My midwives office would declare you automatically GD with a score that high, meaning the wouldn't even bother with the 3 hour.

Thanks for the support, umsami! I'm a VBAC patient, so I'm pretty freaked out that I'll be diagnosed with GD and then somehow that will impact my ability to have a VBAC. But hopefully even if I am diagnosed, I'll be able to manage with diet alone, which will allow me to move forward with my birth plans. If I'm put on insulin, I may risk out of the birth center, which would be a bummer to say the least. I'm really happy to know that you were still able to have vaginal births, though. That's encouraging!

Pandme, yeah my midwife mentioned that some practices wouldn't even let me take the 3-hour. I know it's not likely that I'll pass, but I'm hoping.

I hope you pass! I didn't fail the 1 hour, but have lots of friends who have... seems like most passed the 3 hour so you never know?
I don 't know if you're allowed to eat beforehand, but I ate a protein-only breakfast of eggs and bacon, lots of water, and really feel like that helped me pass the one hour. I've noticed that protein helps me maintain a better blood sugar in general.
I also ate a bunch of greasy, proteiny/ potato-y bar food the night before so who knows...
Sorry I don't have more advice, but I'd give the proteins a try. Good luck!

Good luck, mama.

Good luck. I know how stressful gd can be. I had hard to control blood sugar levels & was on insulin after trying diet & glyburide. That said I had a nice vaginal birth. Please try to not let this become terribly upsetting for you.

You guys are wonderful. Thanks so much for the support and well wishes! I just finished the 3-hour and while I feel tired and cranky and kind of gross from all that sugar, it wasn't that bad. I get the results tomorrow, so here's hoping I pass!

I hope you pass! I had GD in both of my previous pg, and it didn't cause any complications at all. I will say that I had to completely scrap the ridiculous diet that the dietician gave me. The more protein/fat I ate, the more normal my blood sugars were. But hopefully you won't have to worry about it!

I hope you passed too! Please update when you know!

You guys, I passed, I PASSED!!!!! I am shocked and really happy. I forgot to ask what the numbers were, but the RN said they were "perfect" and was really happy for me. Thanks so much for your well wishes, I think they worked!

So glad to hear it!!!!! Yay!!!

I often wonder if people who eat a healthier diet in general, and aren't used to processing corn syrup, fail that test more easily. When I drank that stuff, I felt so incredibly ill. My numbers were high.

Glad you passed it!

usami, thanks for the advice on how to pass it! Will do!

AWESOME! Maybe you just ate something really weird for the 1 hour?

RedOakMomma I read something like that somewhere... that if your body isn't used to all that sugar it won't process it as expediently. I am a really healthy eater so I think that much sugar was a shock to my system. Also, my doula was telling me that stress = adrenaline, which can impact your blood sugar. I was really stressed the morning of the one-hour, because I hate needles and because the girl was having trouble finding a vein and kept stabbing me. I'm thinking that had something to do with it as well? Good luck passing yours!
