Question for UC mamas

Hi there!

I have a friend who is pregnant and planning her first UC (she is also doing UP). She's due in a few weeks and asked me to post a question for her.

What do you do with the cord? She knows hot to cut it and everything, but she just can't remember how long to keep the clamp on. Although this is her fifth pregnancy, she just can't remember how long the clamp stayed on with the other kids. We both have tried internet searches and have both come up with nothing. Any help you ladies could give would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I leave the clamp on until the cord looks shriveled, about 24 hours usually. Then I gently remove the clamp and clean the stump, if necessary.

i didn't have a clamp.

we kept the placenta attached for a number of hours, then cut it. no clamp necessary. within half an hour or so, it goes limp and flat, sort of sealing itself, and then you can cut it no clamp, no problem.

You don't need a "clamp" either. You can just tie it off with some thread, floss, yarn, or whatever you have on hand. Soft ties like that can stay on as long as the cord is attached. In the hospitals they kind of remove them before you go home. So 24-48 hours I'd say.
