Bored With Movies - Wanna Throw Out Some Recommendations?

I'm a big time movie lover. Grew up in a house full of big time movie lovers . Can't say I've had the time to do much reading/movie watching between school, taking care of DS (3.5) being PG with #2, etc. and so on . But, we love Netflix for all these reasons and more.

I'm just bored with movies :yawning . I don't know why. Maybe I'm just cranky as hell this week . I want different stuff on my queue. What have you seen worth recommending? Off the top of my head I love sci-fi, horror, independent stuff, documentaries, thrillers. Not sure what I'm in the mood for. Not into romancy type stuff but am open to various genres.

Blah, I've got a baby foot shoved into my ribcage and some weird reflux thing going on . I'm getting up to walk around now .

Mmm... try the first season of Doc Martin on Netflix. If you have ROCU (instant watch) you can get the whole first season instantly. It's English Comedy and really excellent.

Try the movie Snowcake. Strange and wonderful. I'm sure you've seen The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and her lover but if you haven't...it's my all time favorite. (slightly dark but worth getting through the whole thing)

If you want to escape from adult world in to dream like child's world... see any of the Hiro Miyazaki movies. Amazing! Each and everyone of them.

I second Snow Cake. Wristcutters: A Love Story was also good.

Yeah, I saw Wristcutters in the theater when it came out. I really enjoyed that one. Second rec for Snowcake huh? Maybe I'll reconsider that one. Reading the description didn't do much for me.

Good idea. I love Asian horror but it never really crossed my mind to look for foreign versions of my favorite genres. I blame the children .

How about TV series? DH and I enjoyed Firefly and Freaks and Geeks. Both were canceled after one season so only 6 disc commitments

After not subscribing to Netflix for years, I was just updating my queue to re-subscribe and was looking for ideas too.

You may not like my recommendations since I do not like sci-fi or horror films...
I saw some of these years ago;not sure if I would still like them today:

Red Violin – tells the story of a famous violin who travels through many cultures.
The Spanish Prisoner – intrigue mystery with quirky style
Brotherhood of the Wolf – French action, sci-fi-ish, werewolf type movie LOL
Chocolat – Johnny Depp and Juliet Binoche
Dead Again – past lives, murder, hypnotism with Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson
City of Lost Children – futuristic darker movie with a strange charm. French.
Drugstore Cowboy – Gus Van Sant director
The Incredibly True Story of two Girls in Love - ok ok it's a love story, of the young lesbian variety

OP, have you seen Let the Right One In and Pan's Labyrinth? You also might the Bollywood movies Asoka or Company -- Bollywood is heavy on the romance generally, but Asoka is a historical epic and Company is an organized crime drama.

I don't think it's on DVD yet, but when it comes out Zombieland is so, so fun.

Thanks! Most of these were seen premotherhood. I am SO behind on new movies now and just watch whatever DH brings home.

But I did see Let The Right One In and it's very good. So OP I recommend this too.

I had planned on renting Pan's Labrynth but keep forgetting. Must see it soon!

Oh I also recommend The Others (had Nicold Kidman) I thought it was pretty good and very haunting.

Has anyone seen 'Water'? If so, how did you like it? (It is the next movie in my Netflix queue.)

We watched Oleanna this week. We almost turned it off after a few minutes (mostly because Debra Eisenstadt drove us crazy at the beginning) but are glad we watched it to the end. We didn't love it; but it was interesting and left us thinking/discussing.
