It's starting to hurt w/ a 3 month old.

I don't think it's our latch. He takes a good bit of the areola in his mouth, same as he's always done. I am a little engorged, but it's not really an engorgement pain either. During nursing sessions, I have a bit of a knife-like pain at the nipple. On my right breast, waaaaay up by my armpit, I have a dull soreness when I press on it (maybe that's a plugged duct? But why would it be so high up?).

But anyway on the nipple pain, that happens on both sides, and the last time it hurt like this, DD was 7 months old and I started my cycles 10 days later (it was my very first PP ovulation causing the pain). I surely hope that I'm not ovulating this early, lol.

I think at any age a lo can get lazy with their latching and you almost have to relearn - at least I know it's happening right now with my 11mo. I would seek out a LC or LLL if it were me (and I have)

Hm... it's starting to hurt now even when I'm not nursing. I'm thinking it's another blasted plugged duct. (where's that bang-head smiley when I need it, lol)

It looks like a quarter-sized bruise on the side of my right breast, and a pea-sized bruise on top of it. They are both purple.

It could be a yeast infection. Although, I've never heard of bruising with that. Do you have the chills or a fever? It might be a clogged duct that has turned into mastitis. Has your nursing times/frequency changed lately? I got mastitis when my LO was 3 months the 1st week I returned to work.

ETA: nurse, nurse, nurse and massage your breasts. Definitely consult a LC or LLL as a pp suggested.

oh s andrea!!!

i got a plugged duct in my arm pit when millie was 3 days old. it was like a golf ball under my arm pit. you have breast 'tissue' (supportive) all through your arm pit and up into your arm. i used cold compresses and then deep massage during pumping (nursing in your case) to fully empty the breast and remove the clog. you may have to also use a different nursing position to fully empty. good luck!

Seems to be some better today. It's still bruised-looking, but it doesn't hurt nearly as bad anymore. I've been massaging it while DS was nursing.

Interesting on the cold compresses. I've always heard that as hot as you can stand it was a better thing to do for a plugged duct. Doesn't matter now though since I didn't do either one this time, lol.

Is it possible that it actually is a bruise?

I guess it could be possible... but I've never had a bruise quite that color (on my breast it was a reddish purple, and my normal bruises are more a bluish purple), and there was a small lump inside that I could feel. So I think that this time it was a plugged duct. But during one of my nursing sessions yesterday, I realized that the pinchy feeling I was having was being caused by actual pinching, and DS's long fingernails, lol.

LOL! That at least is an easy answer.
