Can we talk about tables?

I am trying to decide just what I want in a new table before I buy one that doesn't meet my needs. I have 2 dds, in March they will be 6 and 2 1/2.

Right now we have a small table that worked fine when I had 1 kid. Now we have two, and the table just isn't cutting it. Not only that, the leg has broken, so now I really need a new one.

The current table is big enough for each child to have a piece of construction paper on it, and no bigger. no room for crayons, scissors, glue, stamps, etc. So those supplies sit on the floor and the kids have to keep getting up and down when they want a new color or other supply, etc.

The table is also not big enough for them to both do play doh either.

So I need a table that is big enough for 2 kids to work at. Also, there is no saying that they both want the same activity at the same time either.

Do I buy 2 smaller tables so they each have their own or a table big enough to accommodate both at the same time? I'm leaning toward the bigger one.

They also like to cook for their dollies and serve them food at their table.

And also, I am contemplating another table for use with snacks/drinks. To keep the food out and a glass pitcher of water with some glasses. But I don't really want that directly in the middle of the play space either. I have no idea where I would put another table though.

So, I guess I am trying to decide - 1 table or 2? What size?

Is a 28x28" big enough, or a 20x30 or a 24x36 or what? I don't want to go too big because I don't want to take away too much from the amount of play area that they have.

DH says they should just use the dining room table for their activities since it is big. But I'm not sure about that as I feel the kids don't have as much freedom of movement at the dining table since they have to sit on chairs and can only reach so far whereas at the small table, they can choose to stand or use a chair and easily switch back and forth.

Any thoughts? Please don't suggest IKEA furniture as there are none anywhere around here, but if you do have feedback on size and usage or other brands of table, that would all be much appreciated!

I'd check thriftstores for coffee tables. Figure out what clearance you need under the table for their chairs (And consider if the chairs can be shortened with a saw ) and take a measuring tape to the store.

Oh, they don't need chairs for their crafting? Then just go to the thrifstore and grab any cheap table that looks around the right height. You can save on some play space by tucking a toy bin or two underneath.
