Expectations for 3 y-o at gym class? - Page 2

Some gyms are in the business of churing out elite gymnasts so they put very little time, effort and money into true recreation programs. Even their preschool programs are geared towards finding those kids with potential. It seems like this is the type of gym you are attending now.

Not all gyms are like that. You just need to find a gym with a different focus.

I would pull them out and put them in a more relaxed program. I have my 3 yo in My Gym and love it because its a mix of gymnastic skills, free play, and circle time. It's parent participation until age 3.5 or so.

I think its realistic for some 3-4 yo kids to wait that long for turns, etc. but not for ALL. Certainly not for mine. My son is VERY active and independent and is still working a lot on things like turn taking. I'm very picky about the activities I put him in because I don't want him to develop the mindset that there's something wrong with him for being so active and curious.

Exactly. My son was in a ski program last month - the youngest in his class since he had made the 3yo age cutoff by days - and they are absolutely like this. They produce some really amazing skiers at a young age too which reinforced to me the idea that a program can be both age appropriate and gentle and still focus on serious skill building.

My kids are going to be doing gymnastics and dance through our local Parks and Recs department for just this reason. I want it to be fun for my kids and want to minimize the distractions (other classes for older kids taking place, low key, no big equipment that they won't be able to use but are enticing, etc.)
