I've been thinking about a trip to the Riviera Maya for ages now but I just don't want all of us to stay in one room, so I thought the next best thing would be to stay off resort and in town, like Play del Carmen, which I've read is nice, but friends and family (who I'll admit, are pretty Mexico ignorant) say it isn't safe for tourists to stay in town (thieves, drug dealers, etc). Is there any truth to this, esp about Playa del Carmen. What other towns would be nice, have children's activities, etc?
