Help with 16 month old - extensive cavities

Hello, I need some help.

I have a 16 month old and we just discovered that he has extensive cavities on the top 4 of his baby teeth. Our pediatric dentist is going to try and save the teeth but there is the possibility that they will need to be pulled. Due to their location (near the gumline) they can not be "filled". We go back at the beginning of February and he will try to scrape away as much of the decay as possible.

His decay was caused by a two month period when he was on an elemental formula (basically corn syrup) due to his extensive allergies.

What I need help with is what *I* can do to help stop and reverse the decay through nutrition. I am familiar with Weston Price and have been for quite some time but due to his extensive allergies I let the ball drop on that for him. My daughter is 5, just had her first dental appointment and has no decay.

His allergies (confirmed IgE and serious, he's had some anaphylactic episodes and has been to the ER, etc) are: dairy (casein as well), wheat, egg, peanut, nut, sunflower seed, soy and I think that is about it.

I just need help with ideas for helping to improve his gut (we're working on helping his gut to heal from allergies) and help to stop/reverse the decay. My ideas so far are:

-probiotics
-digestive enzymes
-bone broth
-water kefir
-fish oil/cod liver oil

What else should I be doing?

P.S. He is still nursing so I also welcome suggestions on what I can consume that will make it to him and help.

Cell salts
Pascalite clay directly on the teeth
Is your child breastfeeding now? If so you could up the nutrient dense foods too.
What about some greens everyday, raw and/or steamed?

That's good, but it works best when combined with High Vitamin Butter Oil:

Dr. Price always gave cod liver oil along with high-vitamin butter oil, extracted by centrifuge from good quality spring or fall butter. He found that cod liver oil on its own was relatively ineffective but combined with high vitamin butter oil produced excellent results. The butter oil contains what he called Activator X, now considered to be vitamin K2, which works synergistically with vitamins A and D.

Definitely Xylitol products.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylitol

He is probably too young for gum, but there are several different types of xylitol candies (mints, sours) that taste good (my 2.5 year old DS likes several of them). There's a xylitol spray (Spry Rain) which is great when on the road or between brushings, there are Spiffies dental wipes with xylitol which I really like, also for on the road, and of course, there's the regular xylitol which you can add to food, smoothies, etc. (Just make sure not to overdo it, it has a laxative effect )

It's important for the xylitol to stay in the mouth as long as possible, ingestion doesn't really have dental benefits (but I think it's still better than sugar so I use it in food too).

There was a thread on here a few weeks (months?) ago where people posted their (online) sources for all the xylitol products, that might be of interest for you

There's also something called MI paste that's helpful.

If you really want to work aggressively against the decay, look into Heal-o-Zone treatments. Those seem to make the difference between just doing your best to stop the decay and actually coming out the winner. (Lots of info to be found on this board, in the sticky thread as well as in other threads).

Good luck.....I know how you feel.
My son will have to have extensive dental work done in the next weeks/months. I was able to slow down the decay but not halt it, let alone reverse it. We don't have a heal-o-zone practitioner anywhere in the state, maybe with that we would have had a better chance.

Unfortunately, he cannot have butter. But thank you for all of the other suggestions. I will look into them.

You may have to supplement with a Vitamin K2 then if your LO cannot have butter oil. How about ghee?

He is highly allergic to dairy including goats milk so I'm not willing to try any derivatives of dairy at this point.
