Preventing Pink Eye after being around Pink Eye

My niece has pink eye she came up to dinner at mom's house with her dad(my brother) and his wife.

Since my son was playing with her toys and that was even after I said don't get so close to her . Don't touch toys .

My son's grandma (my mom) hugged and held my niece then she gave brendan a hug afterwards .

So if Brendan was going to get pink eye since it is highly contagious so when would he end up getting it if if he was ?

If there is a possible chance I can prevent pink eye before it occurs because it says that if you touch a infected person it will be transferred to another person .

Also, what about for adults ?

Was she being treated with antibiotic eye drops? If so, it's likely she wouldn't have been contagious. Also, it could've been viral pink eye. If it was viral, it would require no treatment and the pink eye by itself would not be contagious (the virus causing it could, though). Usually viral pink eye accompanies a cold. As for preventing, the only thing to do is wash hands and not touch the eye area. FWIW, my kids have had pink eye several times. Dh and I have never contracted it from them.

As for contracting pink eye by simply touching another person...I think you would need to touch their eye area then touch your eye. Or sharing a washcloth, towel or pillowcase.

Yes you can prevent and treat it by washing your eyes with very diluted baby shampoo.
