i have been thinking alot about hs'ing and when i asked my kids last night what they thought all three(9,11,14) said no they want to see their friends. has anyone dealt with this? how do i convince them it would be something they would like? if they are totally set against it do i just not do it?

At those ages I would respect their wishes. Particularly the 14 year old, who is definitely old enough to make up his mind, IMO. And it seems really unfair to respect his wishes and force the other two home.

When were you planning on starting? Maybe over the summer you can try to do some of what you were planning, and if they enjoy it offer to keep it up.

You may want to pick up, "The Teenage Liberation Handbook," by Grace Llewellyn.

"Creative Home Schooling," by Lisa Rivero might also be a good read for you - and helpful in what to consider while considering homeschooling. I wish I had read it at least 2 years before I did. There is so much flexibility in how to structure or not structure homeschooling.

If I were you, I would ask the question, Is this something that you want to do? Why at this stage in your kids lives? Are your kids having problems in school? Are you missing them, while they are in school? At the age your kids are at, they should have a lot of input in their schooling. I am curious what is your motivation in home schooling at this point in time?

These are all really good questions. It's also good that the OP is considering options. Sometimes kids don't know what's available and how it all works until they've been presented with all the possibilities.

basically i have always wanted to hs, but life circumstances have prevented it. now im at a place where i can. the 14 yr old is my dss, my 11 year old is going into jr high and i worry about him. jr high & high school are when drugs and sex start to become easier to get. my dss tried marijuanna a few months ago with someone he met at school. he is meeting moe kids that do drugs. there are fights at his school all the time (this is the jr high my 11 yr old will be going to) kids getting stuffed into garbage cans, kids acting out in classes. we found out dss was stealing matches in science class and has been in trouble for throwing and shooting things in class. my 11 year old is emotionally pretty immature still. i worry he will be an open target in jr high (he already has some issues getting picked on) and i dont want him exposed to drugs, etc like my dss has been. there is only one jr high and high school near us. they dont seem very good. i want to be there more for what they are learning. they come home from school and can barely remember what they learned.
