what color should I paint my kitchen cabients?

Um, your cabinets are made of melamine, the countertop material, right? Are you going to try to paint the melamine part, too? Paint on those in a kitchen where you scrub things a lot may not stick really well, even if you sand a lot and use special grippy primer. If it were me, I'd look into having someone glue new faces on the front, might be a better option. And there are so many neat laminates now to choose from. You could then paint the wood part if you wanted.

At the very least, get advice from a good paint store to make sure painting will work the way you want it to. The paint is chipping off the cabinets in our kitchen (wood ones) because someone didn't prep right drives me nuts. The worst parts are the inside, which is made of....melamine.

ok, my temporary fix in a similar situation (back in college) was to put pictures on them.

since our house was very colorful and our dishes had a very island feel, i went with Gauguin. I had inexpensive prints laminated, and then just used double-sided tape to hold them on.

for drawers and the like, my sister and i just laminated colored paper in a specific shape (using a stencil), and then put them on with double-sided tape.

it was colorful, easy to clean, and covered the things i did not like.

now, i would do this in a pinch, and then when i had the money saved up, i would get new faces/fronts on them in a look that i liked.

the melamine isn't offensive - i would just paint over the oak in any cheerful color you like. even though you haven't moved in, you must own some kitchen linens. you could draw inspiration from those. or if you don't like the stuff you currently have, then find something you do really like and use that. any color you love would be great!

This could totally change the look of your cabinets,
then if you wanted to, down the road you could reface them- and reuse the hardware if you really love it

I would paint the wood parts to match the cream that is already on the other parts. Then I would get nice new hardware to dress them up.
