Let's play a game of "name that breed" (PUPPY PICS INSIDE!!)

So we got a puppy. It really was opportunistic. We always said that when our oldest wasn't with us anymore (which she still is!) that we would get a large breed that I could use to continue my weight pull/carting interests with (had narrowed it down to an American Bulldog or Rottie). I started with Kali when she was about 7 and could only go so far with her size, and then as she aged it became impossible to pull anymore, so I retired the wagon and harness.

Anyway, looking on the local shelter site a couple weeks ago I found a litter of "bull dog mix" puppies and instantly fell in love. I saw them go from 7 down to 2 in less than a week, and finally this weekend popped in to see them.

Before I knew it we were doing the paperwork, but because they were just getting close to closing and the vet wasn't in to take his stitches out (we went on Sunday) we had to come back today to finalize it all.

Anyway, he's home. And so full of it. He's a big ball of loose skin and bones.

He looks very much like a mastiff in the body. Almost has the sway in his back with the high angled hips. Definitely doesn't appear to have the heavy muscling in the back end that the bulldogs do (though that could be puppy proportions). And his muzzle is more square. And he has the fawn colouring in his mask. I think his eyes look pit-type. He's got lots of loose skin and wrinkles on his head.

Anyway, here are some pics. I'll have to get better ones of his topline tomorrow.

I stink at this but. . .I see Boxer.

I definately see boxer!

I see Boxer too, but if he's still a puppy, maybe mastiff? It is an adorable dog!

Interesting, I dont see boxer or mastiff in him. I do see maybe a tiny bit of pit, and perhaps some sort of pointer or lab. Really though, I think you've got yourself a nice Heinz 57. It will be interesting to see what he looks like as he grows!

I don't know what breed he may be other than some sort of bulldog, but just wanted to say he is gorgeous! He looks all soft and smooshy, and it makes me want to snuggle.

I was thinking the same. He is a very cute dog though!

I see pointer too. How old and how big?

I see boxer in the jaw shape, but the slightly wrinkly head, head shape/tail tell me AmStaff or APBT

He's 13 weeks. Not exactly sure on the weight, the last weigh in in his charts says 12 pounds from back in January. My jacks are 12 pounds and roughly 13 inches tall and he's bigger than both. I'm guessing 18-20 pounds. We have an appointment Friday with my vet, so we'll see.

I see Pointer mixed with some kind of bulldog/pitbull/mastiff type breed. He looks very American Bulldog-ish to me.

I think something like this as well. He's soooo cute! As far as size, I know all dogs grow differently, but Gromit was about 16 pounds and the exact size of our average sized miniature schnauzer at 10 weeks, and now he is 13 months and about 75 pounds.

Agreed. Either boxer or pit combined with pointer/hound. Very cute little pooch.

Our family said boxer too, but he doesn't look like a boxer at all in person. I've come to the conclusion that the colours on his face, in a photograph, REALLY make him look like a boxer, but in person his face is much more square, and the white shading that makes his face look dished from a straight-on photo doesn't have that affect in person.

I definitely see pointer. In fact, when I first saw him at the shelter I said pointer or hound. But that could just be his puppy ears.

I think it's going to be anyone's guess. From what I gather, my husband was saying that the adoption counselor said the woman surrendered them because she couldn't afford them, so they have some history on them. They said on his paperwork "bull dog mix", and when they say mix it's usually pit. I think I might call and see if I can found out a bit more. But I'm guessing bull dog and pit.

DH thinks it's a pitbull/mastiff mix... I'm thinking more along the lines of American Bulldog/Mastiff mix.

Regardless, SUPER CUTE! We are talking about getting another puppy now.

Here's a pic of our boxer/pit mix at 9 weeks.

Here she is now at a little over 1 and 50lbs. Apparently she looks very similar to an american bulldog.

Your puppy looks most like an American Bulldog to me, but I am no expert in that breed. He reminds me of the dog from Little Rascals a bit too. I think that he was a pit bull, but he didn't look much like any of the pit bulls I've seen. There seem to be a lot of variations in what constitutes a pit bull.

Well, supposedly we KNOW he is part American Bulldog. The "mix" part, I suspect, was purposely kept vague because certain breeds aren't as adoptable. Like pits. His paperwork says "American Bulldog Mix". I guess time will tell. He's like 4 legged Kinder Surprise. Sans the chocolate.

According to the person we got her from her mom was a pit and her dad was a boxer. Our neighbor has an american bulldog and she does look like a mini version of her. The american bulldog is 100lbs while our doggy is 50lbs.
