Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert

Has anyone read it yet? It's the new book by Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love. I really enjoyed it. It's a book about her road to a second marriage and all of her research while trying to decide and reconcile the idea of marrying again. It had great personal inisights as well as historical facts about weddings and marriage from different parts of the world and religion from all sorts of points of view - hetero- and homo-sexual marriages, marriages of slaves, woman's POV, men's POV, etc. Anyone want to discuss?

Thanks for posting this! I've been wondering whether this book is as good as Eat, Pray, Love. It sounds intriguing! I'll be back in a while - the book is still on order at my library.

I'll have to look for it, I enjoyed her first book.

Subbing...

I'm half way through the book and will come back to discuss when I'm done!

So did she marry that guy from Eat, Pray, Love? Thanks. I can't wait to read it.

Yes, this is about her trying to come to terms with marriage and there unique circumstances in getting married.

Hmmm. so she did tie the knot with him. Okay, I'm going to the library tomorrow.

I read her TIME magazine interview promoting the book and was not impressed. She spouted totally inaccurate statistics like "85% of people who get married under the age of 25 divorce" which is completely untrue (in fact, those who marry from 23-27 have lower divorce rates than those who marry older or younger. Even the worst divorce rate, for teen marriages, are ~50% ending in divorce - nowhere near her crazy claim of 85%!).

Time interview

Quote:
Interviewer: You use some statistics to show how a lot of young people's marriages end up in divorce. In general, do you think people under 25 shouldn't get married?
Elizabeth: What I think is amazing is not that 85% of people who get married under the age of 25 get divorced, it's that 15% of them stay together. How did they manage to pull that off? You almost can't wait too long. It's the single simplest measure to predict divorce.

I've just put this on hold at my library. I LOVED Eat Pray Love, so I have high hopes for this one to at least be entertaining. I'll be back!

I have been wanting to read this. I LOVED Eat, Pray, Love and am hoping this book will be as good...I have read really mixed reviews about it though.

I seem to be the only one on the planet who did not enjoy "Eat, Pray, Love". But I plan to read this new one if they get it at my library. I wont be buying it like the other one. I will be stalking this thread to see other's opinions of it

Well, I find that offensive. I married at 20 (my husband was 23) and over 20 years later, we're still married to each other. We've had our ups and downs, of course, but we're still together.

You're not the only one. I found EG whiny and self-centered. I really liked the premise of the book, just not the author. I'm not wasting time on anymore of her drivel. My "to read" list is over 1,000 books long. I can't waste time on junk like hers

I appreciate everyone's thoughts on Eat, Pray Love, but would like to stick with Committed for this thread. If you've read it, I would love to hear from you - whether you liked it or not. But if you are here just to bash the author or her past books, please start your own thread. Thank you.
