Potty torture!

My 5 mo old recently started crying the second we take him into the bathroom. If we take him anyway, sometimes we can calm him down and he'll go. But meanwhile, my dh and I acting like a couple of buffoons, whistling, clucking, jumping around, and doing just about anything to distract the kid so he relaxes enough to go. Sometimes he STILL screams and then poops, a few minutes later. I need advice on how to fix this negative association and make potty time fun. DS is acting like it's torture! Previously we'd go 10 days in between poop misses. Now some days he'll poop in his prefold twice a day. I know 5 mo is a typical time for strikes (ds is VERY distracted) but I'm curious to hear what others have done to get over this hump.

Can you have him go in a different place for a few days? Too bad it's winter (at least here)--when my son went through this (around 5 months) we took him outside and he was happy as can be.

If neither are an option, I think you have the right idea with distracting. Maybe start it sooner though, before you're in the bathroom and he's fussing: sing as you walk there, let him carry a fun toy, etc. Or find something he really likes to do while he goes--look in the mirror, read a book, etc.

Good luck!
