My babe is sick and miserable and I haven't a clue what to do:(

Hi there, I've been gone some time now and much has changed. I have another young babe now, this one just turned 5 mos, his big sister is now 2yrs. The past few days we've been battling a nasty cold in my DD due to the negligence of our gas company (ignored a leak we told them we had and our gas ran out and they left us without heat in 20° weather), and though I've tried so hard to keep it from affecting my littlest, it has, and he sits in my lap as we speak crying because he is so miserable. I haven't had babes in such cold weather (we were in CA w/ my DD at this age), and I haven't a clue what to do, I don't want to pump him full of tylenol as other mothers have suggested and am desperate for direction they both have low grade fevers and coughs (it seems his is worse than hers, but it may be because coughing upsets him so), there is wetness in their coughs, though I haven't seen them cough any phlem up, and they've both got runny noses. They both are so unhappy, if anyone can offer suggestions I would love you forever TIA

Hot soup for the older one. Lots of nursing for the little one. Distractions, maybe a fun toy or a trip to a warm store to hang out in the toy aisle.

Arnica would be nice...

And good for you for not giving them Tylenol. You can search mothering to find a lot of info on Tylenol...it's not good.

thank you so much for your reply!!! I do have some arnica... i must find it, everything was so disrupted in our move.

My DD is so staunchly opposed to soupd, I've been trying to get some in her almost every day for a week! Is there anything you can think of that would give her the same good things as hot soup that come in a more... solid form, I suppose?

It's good that their coughs are productive. You might want to make sure they're propped up a bit more than normal when they're sleeping.

I can't immediately find my arnica homeopathy tube dealie, but i do have some arnica massage oil, do you think using that would have a similar affect?

Yes I concur, that's why I have tried not to worry so much about the cough, because it is doing its job, it just breaks my heart to see him cry because of it

Well I was just thinking hot soup b/c you mentioned it's chilly. That always warms me up.

Keep them in lots of warm clothes. My oldest is a picky eater, so when he's sick I just keep try to give him lot of fruits to keep him hydrated. Will she drink any type of warm liquid? Like tea or the hot cider? Those hot liquids tend to help coughs and they're soothing to the chest. I make my boys "warm lemonade," which is just hot water, then dissolve some honey and add a squeeze of lemon. Those are all good when you're sick. My boys are 17 months apart, so I know how hard it can be dealing with two sick babies. Do your best and just remember that it will pass.

Do you have a room where you could run a vaporizer with vicks or eucalyptus oil? That would help with the cough, or rub vicks on the bottom of their feet and put socks on. Don't know why it works but it seems to help. HTH.

Gosh, thank you mamas so much for your responses! I don't have a vaporizor but we do have a menthol rub that i can put on their feet, I'm going to find it now, and tomorrow I'll have DH pick up some lemons and honey on his way home from work. I never would have thought og these tips to try, thank you!!

Vitamin D drops

There is so much on the internet about this now.... I can't tell you enough to get soem Vit D drops... if you can only get the gels, just dissolve them in water, take out the gelly bits and give them the lil bit of water... but i go tht evit d drops and our lives are immensely better. we live in NW and there is no sun for months.... I take 4000 IU a day, 6000 if I think I might encounter a germ, or if I feel one enter my body, the 6 yo gets1500 IU and the baby gets 1200 Iu every day... you can search for the truth about vitamin d on youtube, and also dr sherri tenpenny has a wonderful article on it. Even mainstream is realizing we are deficient in this vitamin....and it is causing major illnesses. we have been around people wiht the flu and not caught it at all, and before i knew about it, we had waht i suspect was swine flu, which was mild anyway, but after a few days on the vit d drops, we all felt 100% again....i post this now and look fo rhte links and come back wiht them

I don't worry about being tested, as I know I am deficient since there is no sunlight and we don't even go outside for months in the winter.... also there is no chance of taking too much, unless you take like 400000 IU for a day or more I think the articles say....

wow thank you! my dd was prescribed vit d back in CA, but we never used it bc we were always in the sunshine. I'll check the exp. date on it to see if it's still usable. otherwise I'll make an appt to get some more. those articles and videos are so informative!
