granted when I got married we were too young too have been married and divorce (legally, we were too young....we were just barely old enough to get married as it was) but I don't remember having to do anything than mark no on the paper and sign. no one did a back ground check or gave us an official ok or anything that I can remember.

Yup, I think marital property is the same as community property. I'd guess that if they're not strict about it, it can cause major hassels later on.

When I got married, there wasn't any waiting period or background check or anything. If we'd both checked "never married" that would be the end of it. Since he checked "divorced" we had to provide a copy of the divorce decree -- which involved an overnight express from that county! It's probably all about resources....almost always, everyone is honest on those forms...so why spend tons of money investigating every applicant. Once in a while someone is dishonest, so spend a little money dealing with them.

Much better to know now even though it's a crummy way to be spending what should be a happy time for you.
