Quinn, boy or girl?

We love the name Quinn. Picked it months ago. But I recently found out that it's the name of a female TV character!! I understand all the reasons for gender neutral names, but we have a "difficult" last name, and I really don't want to make it worse by giving our little guy a "girl's name". What do you think?

The first Quinn I can remember was a little boy on a tv show

the second Quinn I remember was quite a masculine Marine who sat around a campfire with us singing Beatles songs.

If you are talking about Dr Quinn, Medicine woman... Quinn was her LAST name not her first. Her first was michaela... and our children will not remember that show anyway.

one of my closest friends has a daughter named Quinn and my doula's son's name is Quinn. I don't think it's a 'girly' sounding name at all. I think it is a nice name for either gender!

I've always thought of it as a boy name, though it still sounds ok for girl too.

I think of it more as a boy name, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a little girl called Quinn.

If you like it, I certainly don't think it's too feminine to use for your little guy!

I've known two Quinns in real life. Both are 7 year old boys.

I personally think of it as a girls name but I do know of a little boy named Quinten and goes by Quin.

Quinn is a beautiful name for either gender! I know people of both genders who are named Quinn, as well as a boy named Quintin who goes by Quinn.

You might have already done this, but it was #230 for boys last year and #516 for girls, but both were rising sharply. I would suspect with the popularity of Glee, it's only going to go up for girls and unfortunately most names that "go girl" stay there.

I know two girls named Quinn.

Being a huge Bob Dylan fan & Deadhead (Quinn the Eskimo-The Mighty Quinn is a great song by Dylan, covered even better by the Dead), I had Quinn on our list last time as a boy name & did more associate it as a boy name in my own head because the song did...

I think it works for a girl too & yes-Glee could make the girl name popular, but I honestly think the name Quinn has been around awhile & either way is cool. It doesn't scream "girly" to me at all...

A little lyric clip for ya...kind of cute when you think of a new baby coming...

"But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here,
Ev'rybody's gonna jump for joy.
Come all without, come all within,
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn"

I think it's more of a boy's name but perfectly suitable for girl as well.

i love the name quinn , my ex fiances niece was named quinn genevieve. but her parents were going to name their son quinn had she been a boy. i like it for both, more-so for a girl, but either is nice.

I've heard it used for both male and female characters on TV. I personally would use it for a girl name, but I could definitely see it as a boy name too.

To me it's a boy name -- but I've heard it used for a girl, too.

I had liked it if we were going to have a boy. But DH was stuck on it being a girl name. I think it's an either/or name.

The sister on the cartoon Daria was named Quinn. One of the most hilarious little boys I've ever known was named Quinn.

I see it as both. I like Quinn for a boys name.

boy.

Although this day and age, I wouldn't be surprised to hear a female Quinn.

It's true that many names that "go girl" stay girl (Ashley, Shirley, Morgan, all of those lovelies), but I don't think Quinn is one of them.

I think we're in a very specific time right now where it's trendy to give a girl a boy's name. I've seen families that do this...there's one I know with a Charlie, a Noah, and a Finn. All girls. Same with the Glee show...it's a trendy thing to do to name a female character with a male name.

I think the "ley" or "y" or "yn" ending names ARE risky for going girlward, but I would never think of names like Quinlan (or Quinn), Noah, etc. to go girl. They're just too strongly identified with males and male characters.

I say buck the trend, or at least forget about it. If people want to give their girls boy names that's fine, and very WB/HBO of them , but I don't think it should keep other people from using BOY names on BOYS!

I love the name for either boy or girl. VERY gender neutral! Good Luck!
