Cookware Question

Hello. I have a stainless steel double boiler pot. Stupidly, I have been using the steel boiler insert as a regular put and putting it directly on heat to cook food. I finally realized my error last night. The put was discolored on the inside with rainbow markings from high heat, I think. I have since chucked the pot, but want to know if there is any way that this was bad for me and my kids?

Heat tint isn't harmful and doesn't interfere with using the pot. You might be able to remove it with a non abrasive cleaner, baking soda, barkeeper's friend, something like that.

Thanks! I think I was more concerned that since the pot wasn't meant to go on direct heat, that I somehow caused toxic metals to be released into whatever I was cooking.
