protein shakes

Please talk to me about shakes. In 2006 when I had lost 65 pounds I had sugar free spirutein almost every single morning. It was quick and easy, I could toss a few frozen fruits in it. It worked for me. I loved it.
So now here I am, I gained 1/2 of the weight back and I am ready to get serious again. I want to go back to the protein shake for breakfast but spirutein is expensive.
I have been looking at other shakes (I prefer the powders) that cost a LOT less. Can you tell me about any other powders? Most of them are labeled for men who work out all the time and want to build muscle. I guess the "build more weight" labels scare me,lol. But really the back label looks pretty good...low calories, high protein, lowish carbs etc.
So help me out. Does anyone know about these shake powder that you can get at just about anywhere (Target, GMC etc)

I *know* that you don't need them to loose weight. I just WANT it.

Almost every single shake on the market has artificial sweeteners in it, and that is why UNTIL now, i have avoided them. BUT, I just found Jillian Micheals shake sold exclusively at Walmart. It is naturally sweetened with stevia-and contains no soy! Its only $10! Im not a huge fan of protein shakes in general because of the taste, but this doesnt taste bad at all.

I use something called All Whey

It's low calorie for "lean muscle building" The strawberry one tastes like those strawberry malteasers. I love it.

The problem with relying on shakes (and other packaged diet foods) to lose weight is that you don't relearn how to eat and you end up gaining the weight back when you stop eating/drinking them. As you well know.

That said, I've been known to add a scoop of hemp powder to a glass of almond milk for a quick high protein, good fats snack.

Yea I didn't drink it as a replacement either. I only used it after a workout. But if you are determined to use it instead of breakfast, i don't think it's horrible... because it has tons of protein, which really does kick start your metabolism for the day. But yea, once you lose the weight you might gain some back again, like you have.

I always have a bowl of special K for breakfast. I konw there's a fair bit of sugar in almost all cereals, but the milk has protein

I just got back from Wally world and saw this powder. I bought it. I am so excited that it is only $10.
I do wish it had more fiber though.

How much does it have per serving? I think mine has 25 g and I think I paid 40 dollars for 5 lbs of it.

ambereva, bcblondie, FWI My gaining weight back had nothing to do with stopping my protein shake breakfast. There was many other factors. Depression, stopping exercising, drinking soda, stuffing myself with sugary sweets, stopped tracking my calories etc. So don't think of me as proof that protein shakes do not work umkay?

This wasn't a case of me not learning how to eat because I relied on shakes. Believe me after 14 month and a loss of 65 pounds I learned how to eat, lol. I basically fell off the wagon. I am a serious food addict that feel off the wagon. I maintained my weight loss for over a year and a half. I sometime had protein shakes and sometimes I didn't.

The shake is a tool that I use to help loose weight. Not a crutch. Just as I use many other tools.

Off to have some breakfast and a workout.

bcblondie it only has 3 g of fiber per serving. I will have to focus on getting fiber elsewhere I guess.

Ok, good. I see now. I know what you mean about the bandwagon. I have a couple bad days and think "what's the point of eating helathy now? I've ruined it anyways" But if I have a couple days of healthy eating under my belt it's easier to continue

Oh I didn't mean fibre, I mean't grams of protein. If you want a fibre suplement I take metamucil. Lotsa aspartame though But it's pretty much the only aspartame I take in. So it's worth it for the fibre when I need it because (tmi) I've been constipated off and on since giving birth. Stupid hormones. lol.

I think there is15 grams of protein in one serving.

Just got done with workout. Wow, not working out for a year gets to you. My body is a little shocked, lol. I am gonna be sore tomorrow.

Try alternating days, do legs one day, arms the next, KWIM? Otherwise you're completely out of commision for like 4 days while you recover. lol.

And drink that protein powder! Really helps your muscles repair damage from workouts, that make you sore I can always notice the difference. When I run farther than usual my calves/shins hurt. When I guzzle down a protein shake, sometimes I can't even tell I ran.

Part of me is embarrassed to admit it because I am such a whole food snob, but I bought the same protein powder. I also use it as a post-workout recovery snack (I add instant coffee! The horror!), and I drink it on my way to work from the gym.

I just got back on the wagon myself. I kept working out, pretty regularly, but let loose with carbohydrates, and I started a job (and bought a farm!) after I lost all my weight, so I have been working out at generally lower intensity and less frequently. And sleeping less. And stressing more. Fast-forward three years and I am now 25 pounds from where I had been. On the bright side, I know how to do this--and so do you.

So I have learned that, to lose weight, I need to focus on vegetables, protein and fruits, and I will pretty naturally get enough carbs and fats to feel well. The protein shake helps me recover well (I have had minimal soreness after workouts and I am challenging myself), and keeps me from needing a nap when I get to the office, since I have limited time there. I also double the water-to-powder ratio because I find it too sweet, but I don't sweeten my drinks.

I'm two weeks in and 5 pounds down at last weigh-in, so I feel pretty good about my progress. I know some of the weight was high-carb water retention and bloat, but I also see changes in my body already. For now, I will stick with this powder, but I'd like something with a little more fiber, too.
