Laser Printer? X-posted in Learning at Home

Haven't gotten any responses in Learning at Home, so cross-posting here.

Has anyone bought a laser printer for their home to keep up with the homeschooling printables, etc? I have pre-K kids so it would be a long-term investment that I would like to keep throughout their hsing years (at least through high school). Even before printing all the handwriting printables, our Canon inkjet is running us about $75 every other month. ($50 per refill, no clue how many pages of print I can do before I need a refill)

Can anyone recommend a brand or specific printer? I have no idea about laser printers, I just think they may be more cost-effective for our family. Anyone with experience/recommendations would be appreciated. TIA!

The only printer I currently owned is a mono laser (it a brother brand). I specifically bought because it was supposed to be cheap to operate. I am still on the toner cartridge that came with its I've had it several months and have run a couple of reams of paper through it. A new toner cartidge is about $50.

We have a small Dell laser printer that was not too expensive and we've been happy with it.

My parents have this one here: http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Canon%20...ter:1991274917

I plan to buy it once I get the same deal my dad did. He paid $50 after rebate at Staples last fall. It was in the Black Friday Ad for $79 after rebate. My mom is a teacher and uses it a TON and it's very lost cost. Hope that helps!

I live next to a university so with all the printing and copy shops around, I chose not to own a printer. Makes me think twice before printing anything. I like that at the copy shop I can get stuff bound as well (dd's math books are available as a pdf so it's nice to print and bind) and laminated as needed.

Just throwing this out there...

The printer I posted about above is $99 after rebate this week with free shipping. I finally broke down and bought one since my printer has been so crazy lately! You're supposed to be able to get 3500 copies from one cartridge. My dad buys them recycled too!

We have an HP LaserJet 4050 Series. We bought it secondhand 5 years ago and have been using it ever since without replacing toner. I am a light printer. Maybe 10 pages a month...
I think my dh paid $50 for the printer.

We have an HP LaserJet 5MP. We bought it used off Craigslist 5-7 years ago. (It was very reasonably priced, but I forget how much exactly.) It came with the original toner cartridge and we are still using it. We've probably gone through 10-12 reams of paper in that time. (We average a little less than 2 reams per year.) I love the way laser jets print! SOOOO much nicer than ink jets, IMO.

We have a b&w laser printer that we got at Staples a couple years ago for $50 after rebate. (I think its a Samsung 2510.) A friend has a Brother laser printer that she got for a similar deal at Staples a year and a half ago. Toner for the Samsung cost about $90, but they last a long time. I print a lot- coupons, directions, recipes, shipping labels, etc. We go through a cartridge every 8 months or so.

Staples also runs deals on paper, like $1 or $2 a package after rebate. Not sure if this deal is still on, but they had buy 1 get 1 free cases of paper after rebate. (So 2 cases for about $39 after their "easy rebate" which take about 3 minutes to request online, then 4-6 weeks to get your money back.)

I recently bought a Brother mono laser printer as well. After printing a lot of pages (prob for a couple of months) I got a "toner life end" message on the panel. I did some research and found out you can cover up the mirror-like hole on the right side of the toner cartridge and get more life out of the cartridge. I did this and the error message magically went away, lol. They apparently have a smart chip and after so many printed pages, give you the toner end message.
Also, I figured since they were being sneaky about the actual ink amount in cartridges, the whole replacing ink in cartridges wont work/will destroy printer is bs as well, so I went to ebay and bought some toner for my mfc-7340. It's actually a powder and not liquid.
