Does baby have to sit up on their own before they can crawl?

Just curious.... my son can sit up, but not without me setting him down in the sitting position. He's currently working on crawling and can get up on all fours. He can make a move to crawl but will roll over. Someone was telling me he won't be able to crawl until he can sit up on his own. Is this true? It sure looks like he's going to crawl any day now, but I don't see him going from a prone to sitting position just yet, but maybe it works that way.

What was your experience?

Nope, my baby was a crawling lunatic before she could ever sit unassisted
Shortly after she was pulling up on things...the time really flies!

DD learned to sit unassisted shortly after she started crawling.

nope!

My dd is 5.5 months and can crawl but not sit.

nope, in fact I think it's more likely to be the opposite way round, from a front lying position, getting to crawling is easier than getting all the way to sitting.

Yeah to all of the above. DS was definitely crawling and pulling to stand before he figured how to sit up on his own (but he could sit very well unsupported if placed in a seated position before either). He actually only gets to a sitting position now from standing, and it took a couple of weeks for him to get from falling over when he wanted to get down to sitting on his bottom. Mostly he goes from crawling to kneeling to standing to siting to crawling to kneeling . . . However, it took him several months from pulling up to hands and knees to true crawling, not that it really kept him still, he was just slower . Enjoy being able to catch while you can!

I agree with what everyone else said.

Nope, not true. I had one that crawled before she sat up. In fact she'd crawl around and do that sort of roll-to-the-hip maneuver they do to get into a sitting position, but she couldn't sit up on her own, so she'd fall backwards every time. That motivated her to figure out sitting really fast though

I think it is different for each babe. My LO was sitting on her own really early, and was trying to go from sitting into the crawling position for awhile! Her little leg would always get stuck underneath her! She still wound up crawling before 7 months, but definitely mastered sitting first.

I was told the same thing. My dd crawled first and then figured out how to get from crawling to sitting.

Mine started sitting less than a week after starting to crawl - but definitely after. She hadn't even really tried to sit up on her own until she started crawling.

That's funny!

Thanks for sharing your experience. At least now I know I'm not crazy thinking he's going to crawl well before he figures out how to sit himself up, I don't even see him making an effort, but he's all over the place trying to crawl.

My third was pulling himself up and cruising furniture and even crawling...but was not able to sit up. I think it was the last thing he learned before he walked.
