Mercury in Amalgum = BPA in Composite

Hi, I haven't been to the dentist in a while. I went yesterday and have four cavities in the back teeth to have filled. Cosmetics is not an issue. The last cavities I had filled with composite and they are not nearly as strong as the amalgum ones I had before. I had pain in those teeth when chewing for at least two years after.

I asked the dentist about composite and he said that they've found that composite fillings leak BPA, but from what I've found on the 'net it's only for a few hours vs. mercury from amalgum forever.

IME composite fillings are not as strong and are painful when used on back teeth (that get a lot of biting action). If composite fillings do leak BPA into your system are they really any better?

Should I go with the devil I know (amalgum) or the devil I don't (composite)?

Everybody remember when Splenda was the new, healthier artificial sweetener? Amalgums have been used for 150 years, composite for ten or so (?). In another ten will they find the plastics in composite fillings are toxic, too?

Oy!

I remember reading up on this when trying to decide what to do w/ DD -- I decided I was not going to put mercury in DD's mouth, so that left me with composite. Seems to me they were trying to come up with a non-BPA composite (or maybe already have) when I was reading up on it, but can't remember now.... Anyway, I'm sure it would be a pain to find a dentist who would use something that was even newer on the market...
