So what do I really need? Pool and HB kit?

Obviously a pool and the python attachment stuff but what else?

Do I NEED a liner? How about something to go under the pool to protect carpet? I was thinking of industrial grade plastic (we have tons from putting plastic on the windows) or a large tarp and then some bath mats for getting in and out.

What about the homebirth kit? I really don't want those ugly mesh panties... Can't I just use a big pair of regular panties (I have from after my csections). I've always been GBS+ so I will obviously need whatever the cleanse stuff is (I forget the name) as I'm not even testing for GBS this go around.

What else? Just trying to get lists together because I'm thinking I can put together everything cheaper by using other things (like plastic on the bed or a shower curtain liner). We're frugal, what can I say?

Thanks!!!

ETA:
Here's my MW's birth kit list... What do I really need from this?
1 mesh brief (can I use regular underwear instead?)
1 underpads 15/pk
1 sanitary pads 12/pk (I may still have from Bella, plus I plan to use cloth pads)
1 peri bottle
1 newborn cap (do I REALLY need a hat? I bet I have some around here somewhere)
1 perineal cold pack (Still have bunches from Bella's birth)
2 pair procedure gloves, sz 6 1/2
2 pair sterile exam gloves, sz Sm
2 plastic cord clamps
6 4x4 gauze sponges
2 straws (I already have straws for my kiddos... )
6 3gm lubricating jelly

I will die a fiery death before I wear those mesh panties. I just used a regular pair of old cotton panties that I didn't mind ruining -- and they wound up surviving.
The industrial grade plastic would probably work out well.
You might be able to look on the trading post -- a lot of mamas sell parts of their birth kits they didn't use. The gloves and medical things need to be new/ sterile.

We decided not to use a liner. We are putting something underneath the pool to help protect it from unseen legos or whatnot. We used beach towels to catch drips & spills.

If the pool is a rental you need a liner for sanitary reasons...

hmmmm, you birth list is oddly identical to my mw's birth supply list. You can order individual items if you don't want the entire kit and you can order hibscleanse from the same company as well, along with After Ease which my mw suggested before as well.

Here is what I ordered and the total was $12 or something?

1 mesh brief - DID NOT BUY
1 underpads 15/pk - BOUGHT, but got puppy pads off freecycle last time
1 sanitary pads 12/pk - DID NOT BUY, have cloth
1 peri bottle - DID NOT BUY, bought empty condiment bottles last time
1 newborn cap - DID NOT BUY, already have
1 perineal cold pack - DID NOT BUY
2 pair procedure gloves, sz 6 1/2 - BOUGHT
2 pair sterile exam gloves, sz Sm - BOUGHT
2 plastic cord clamps - BOUGHT 1, want to use something else, but just in case
6 4x4 gauze sponges - DID NOT BUY, have some on hand
2 straws - DID NOT BUY, have some already
6 3gm lubricating jelly - BOUGHT

Last time we pieced together our own supplies, but didn't separate them out well (like all the gauze pads and such were in a large box) and our mw ended up using a lot of her own stuff for convenience sake -- so totally make a little kit if you do it on your own. This time, I was just going to buy the whole kit, but just couldn't force myself to buy the pads and panties and such.

We put an old blanket under the birth pool.
We used a fishy birth pool in fact, no liner.
We used an old shower curtain on the bed.

The underpads/chux/puppy pads were very helpful actually. I was glad we had a package even though we had TONS of towels that we had planned to use instead. The pads ended up being much more helpful than I expected and I got over my no-disposable items after realizing that. We did use lots of towels as well.

karen, given your location I'm betting we are using the same mw feel free to pm a name if you want.

Please tell me where to get a fishy pool in md! Will I be able to find it come summer time? I'm due in sept.

I have most of the kit from my hospital birth with bella so I'm pretty sure I have pads (but plan to use cloth) and I know I have several ice packs. I bet I still have my peri bottle, or I could use any sports top water bottle. I was debating on the after ease and planned to ask at my visit

Freecycle is a great idea! I will post there and on my natural parenting yahoo group for some of it too.

Thanks!

Fishy pool will be super easy in the summer, I got mine at Target early summer (was due July). You might even be able to wait until they go on clearance. I was tempted to buy an extra one for $7 when I saw them in fall.

I skipped the Afterease because I didn't really have any trouble last time with after pains but did take motrin for a day or two. I figured I'd be comfortable with motrin again this time as well.

I know a lot of people swear by Afterease, but honestly, I just pop an Ibuprofin for afterpains.
