cod liver oil and vitamin d question

Hi all,

I have been posting about my queries regarding CLO recently. I am currently using Nordic Naturals CLO which has all the Vitamin D filtered out. So I supplement with Carlson's D drops. I have low D so I need to take a minimum of 4000IU per day anyway. If I switch to Blue Ice fermented CLO like some have recommended, the D there is not filtered out, but still is below the 4000IU I need per day, 1 tsp is only 1950IU. So I would still have to take a supplemental source.

That said, if I have to keep using the Carlson's supplement anyway, do you think it really matters if I use the NN or the Blue Ice brand, since I am basically taking the CLO for the EFAs and not for the Vitamin D? The reasons I am stuck on NN are 1.) I can get it much cheaper than the Blue Ice and 2.) I am allergic to cranberries and all the Blue Ice flavors use Cranberry seed extract except the unflavored, which I just checked and it is out of stock until an unknown date.

I've tried NN with the Carlson drops. I can tell you that the NN doesn't help my teeth issues. Also, I can tell that it isn't digested quickly. The difference with the Blue Ice was shocking to me. I still supplement my Vit D3 with the Carlson drops, but the Blue Ice is much higher quality than NN. I think that the fermentation process must add some unidentified substance that increases the potency or perhaps it's the small amount of K2 that is created by fermentation. I don't know. All I know, is that my teeth deteriorated when I took NN and improved as soon as I switched back to Blue Ice.

Thanks for posting about this, Fern. I'm glad you had experience with all the products I am wondering about. Can I ask, since I am not familiar with your teeth issues, was that something caused by taking NN CLO or was that a pre-existing condition that you were taking CLO to help? Now that you take the Blue Ice with the Carlson's, can I also ask you how much extra D3 you take in the form of the D-drops on top of what is in the Blue Ice CLO?

Check around on the internet. There are a few companies that carry the product and they may have the unflavored blue ice in stock.

Yeah that!

Have you checked out Dr Rons site which has the old type blue ice cod liver oil and is not fermented so you can take more oil with less nutrients? They will be out soon so get it while you can.

Same here about noticing a difference with the blue ice and not other brands. I still take additional D3.

If you are using other grass fed animal products, you can get those good EFA's too if that is what you aere looking for, and chia seeds has high omega 3's.
