What kind of thermometer is best?

thanks in advance for any advice! i did a couple of searches here, but didn't see this discussed. sorry if i've missed applicable threads.

i'm expecting my first child, and would like advice on the best thermometer to get. i've heard recently that the forehead/temporal thermometers are the most accurate, and they certainly seem easier to use than either ear or rectal thermometers.

i wouldn't mind spending $ on a great one, i figure it should last for years...

About 6 weeks ago I purchased a fairly expensive temporal infrared thermometer (I believe it is an Exergen). Just in time, because a few weeks later, my 3yo daughter went through a terrible ordeal with the Cold from Hell--temperatures ranging from 101 to 103.4 for 3 agonizing days.

My conclusion? I'm never going back to other thermometers! It was great. Just a sweep across the forehead, and I got consistent, believable readings. And I could take her temperature without waking her up! I was so disgusted with the other thermometers I've had before: there's no way my 3yo would consent to a rectal thermometer, the digital oral thermometers kept giving me unbelievable readings (like 94 degrees), and I've had two ear thermometers in the past, and they just don't EVER work when I need them to (I would just get error messages). I'm glad I finally found a solution, but it was definitely expensive (around $40).

We use the Exergen too and I love it. They sell at walmart for around $30 last time I checked.

I use an ear thermometer right now, it's easy and fast. However, I would like to get the Exergen. . .when my mom was in Hospice it was what they used and it looked so easy. It's also supposed to be very accurate (which ear thermometers aren't).

Yep, we LOVE our Exergen. It's even made in the US!

Just wanted to add that I often give them as shower gifts.
