Raising an newborn/infant: what do you consider essentials? - Page 2

A moby wrap and an ergo. He lived int he moby for the first 3 months of his life, and then when he got too heavy to carry on the front, I started carrying him on my back in the ergo. The carriers are the most used things in this house.

Thanks guys

Like I said, I have a feeling this birth is going to be so much more simple.

I never used a sling with DD when she was born, because we were just home so much and I carried her/and our lounged around until she was mobile. This time I'm getting an Ergo and a Moby wrap because I will NEED my hands free!

SOme people don't use them, some people find them hindering. Personally I was at BRU leaving my 2 day old at home with daddy to buy one. Even at almost 4 months we still use it for every feeding. I've tried the My Breast Friend and I don't care for it at all, it's too stiff.

My essentials for the newborn period:
Boppy
Moby
Aiden & Anais swaddling blanket

At about 2 months, I found a bouncy seat really helpful - I got mine at a consignment store for $10. And at 3 months I wound up having to go buy a stroller (bugaboo - again, consignment).

It also depends on the weather when baby is born... my little guy spent the first month wearing just dipe and a wool/silk t-shirt under his blanket. All those newborn clothes were a waste of money (someone else's, thankfully). By the time he started regulating his temp himself, it started getting colder, and I started putting him in a wool sleep-sack with his wool tee... he lived in that tee the first 2 months or so, and still does sometimes.

Best investments for ds2:

Ergo - already had a moby for early days
King Sized bed - co-sleeping is infintely better
iPhone - hours nursing much more enjoyable, also has white noise and breastfeeding apps
Large kiddopotamus swaddlme blankets - he's 10 mo & 23 lbs and still swaddled,

So, short list, pricey, I know but can you really but a price on sleep & sanity?

take what you can get

I don't have any kind of support system. I registered and nobody got the baby a single thing on my registry. What I did end up with was hand me downs from a cousin looking to save a trip to the donation center. I recieved everything she gave me gratefully. The money I made selling the stuff we didn't need came in handy when my maternity leave didn't cover the bills. Take what you can get, and sell what you don't need!

This is what I found necessary.

Diapers
Wipes
Diaper rash cream
Diaper changing pad
Several Sleep 'n' Play
Socks/Booties
A sling/pouch/wrap
Baby care kit (thermometer, baby scissors, nail clipper, etc)
Swaddle blankets
Boppy (specially in the first 3 months)
Bumbo (after they can support their head, not necessary but very helpful!)
Baby bathtub (I know a lot say it's not necessary, but during the first weeks I didnt have time to clean my bathtub as much as I'd liked to)
Bibs (when they start eating solids)
Hyland's teething tablets

That's it

Things I found absolutely essential:

carseat
diapers and wipes
clothes (mostly had her footed pjs for the first few weeks)
nursing tank & pads
pouch sling
bouncy seat (after dh went back to work, this allowed me to shower and cook)

Things I had but found I didn't really use:

co-sleeper - she ended up in bed with us, even though that wasn't my plan
Boppy - found I actually preferred using a regular pillow
Lansinoh - I just put some breastmilk on my nipples after feedings and let them air dry
Moby wrap - I just found the pouch sling to be so much easier and quicker to use

i think the one thing that i never thought of but got from an MDC thread was the nursing tanks.

b/c the boobs are just too big and uncomfortable to hang free and you don;t really want to wear a bra at night. and it took a while to figure out what size i would need anyway. i'm so so glad somebody suggested it b/c it would have never been on my radar.
