Need some thoughts about poop. Please help.

So I have asked questions about this here before, but the problem only seems to be getting worse so I am looking for more ideas. My 8 mo (almost 9mo) is having poop problems. Acts like constipation, crying/straining etc every little while all day every day, goes days without pooping but continues eating although after several days her eating slows down. However when she does poop they aren't super hard, they are stiffer than she is used to but they are still smooshy. It has gotten progressively worse over the past month or month and a half.

She eats two meals a day (we feed her purees for many reasons that work for us) and she does a combo breastmilk/dairy formula although mostly formula now as I am BFAR. The formula is the same one she has been on since she was 5 days old, it's Earth's Best. She drinks maybe 1/2oz to an oz of water with each meal. We made the mistake of giving her bananas maybe twice, oatmeal makes things worse, and I didn't know about cooked apples until 2 weeks ago so we feed her those a lot thinking they would help . She is eating a ton of prunes and pears, I can't find organic peaches in puree form so I bought some frozen (as it is winter in VT- nothing is fresh) and made some and she HATES them and I can't find apricots in anything but dried form and I am pretty sure those are all sulfured as they are all a pretty orange color so I can't even re-hydrate them and make her some food since I don't really want her to eat sulfites. GAH!

We finally had to give her mineral oil at the advice of her dr two weeks ago and that worked like a charm but then I did my research (we had acted fast out of desperation) and found out nasty things about mineral oil so we have started using flax oil instead. We give that to her 1 to 2 times a day about 2tsps each time. I also sometimes mix in some ground flax seed which she also hates and will refuse to eat when you do so.

It has been almost 7 whole days since her last poop and the last one definitely wasn't enough to have gotten out a whole weeks worth of poop from the week before. I am at a loss, I bought some MiraLAX, advised by her ped, because I just don't know what to do for my baby to help her feel better but I really don't want to use that stuff. I also don't understand why she is straining and crying and screaming and then when the poop does come out it's not rock hard or little pellets or anything. Please help mamas, poor DH and I are at a complete loss.

Flax oil won't work like mineral oil. Mineral oil's advantage is that unlike other oils it's not really absorbed by the body, so it acts as a sort of an intestinal lubricant. But yeah ... I can understand not wanting to use it, considering its associated risks.

Honestly, for the moment I would try the Miralax. It can be wonderful and very gentle stuff for people for whom it works well. Treat the symptom and then worry about the cure, you know? Her stools may not seem hard, but if she's straining and pushing and finding it difficult to get them out, and if a lubricant laxative did help, something that successfully softens them further may help her to at least be comfortable while you and your pediatrician try to figure out just what is causing the problem in the first place.

My son also has some poop issues, although a little different than yours. I never thought I'd ever be so worried about another person's poop!!

I know you mentioned you're serving lots of fruit - how about veggies or beans? Beans are high in fiber & would be easy to puree (similar to "refried" style). Green beans, peas, sweet potato might be good too. DS loves cooked carrots & I just learned those can cause constipation - oops!

I hope you can find something that works. I'm going to be

How long has this been going on? What changed around the time it started? Honestly, it sounds like a food sensitivity, so what foods did you introduce to your diet or hers when this started?

How much food is she eating each day (other than BM)? If she's objecting to the flax, I'd probably give coconut oil a try. It's a really healthy oil to be eating anyway, and every bit of lubrication helps. You can try giving it to her straight off a spoon or you can mix it with other foods.

Honestly, the symptoms you describe sound very similar to the reaction my DS had to Earth's Best dairy formula, except his poops *were* formed - like playdoh. We wound up having to put him on donor milk.

Have you tried gripe water when she starts crying? Bicycling her legs? Does either one show an improvement in symptoms? Poops 7 days apart is not outside the realm of normal, and in between times it could theoretically just be gas pain.

We do self-feeding chunks and slivers of refrig. coconut oil for 10 mo. ds2. Also, frozen blueberries, you can mash them or self-feed. And what about just cutting out all solids for a week or so?

*Here are the foods we found/heard constipating for my 13mo DD
banana
apple sauce
sweet potato
carrots
rice
bread
squash
crackers
potato

*Loosening foods
peach
pear
prune
prune juice
asparagus
peas

I feel like once we started DD on meats, she became more regular than when we just had fruits and veggies....

Amount of exercise seems to correlate, too: more active baby, more active belly

If I can sense constipation coming on for DD, we do ~5oz warm prune juice (1:1 diluted with water) once a day for 1-2 days.

Sorry, just can't get a paragraph together! Just a free train of thought will have to do at this hour....

We did this twice when we started solids at first, once because DD started to poop like 7-8x per day (usually 1x per day), and second time because DD didn't poop for a week. Go figure.

If I can sense constipation coming on for DD, we do ~5oz warm prune juice (1:1 diluted with water = 2.5oz water + 2.5oz juice) 1-2x a day for 1-2 days. Really softens poop very effectively. Warm temp helps loosen your belly.

One time we tried a glycerine suppository because DD didn't poop for like a week and she was clearly uncomfy. It worked right away (in ~20 min). Obviously not a long term solution, but helps clear the hard poop so you can start over, so to speak.

When DD started solids she went from pooping every day to pooping every three days. At one point she seemed to be having some difficulty pooping, so I wound up giving her some prunes. She pooped the same day, and actually she loved the prunes! I'm not a big fan of them myself, but she gobbled them up.

Hope you find something that works soon!

I could have written the exact same question. My 8 mo also seems constipated and uncomfortable, and poops about every 4 or 5 days. He gets breast milk and feeds himself some finger foods (including fruit, boiled veggies, meat, and brown rice). His eating also slows down after some days with no bowel movement...

I'm going to try the watered-down warm prune juice suggestion...and will let you know if it helps us. Maybe just warm water would help too. Probably I'll also give my ds some pear and old-fashioned oatmeal (I see that those foods didn't work for your dd though)

I would also wonder about food sensitivity. A similar thing happened to DS and we later found out that he was allergic/sensitive to several foods. Good luck to you and your little one!
