Where do I find coconut milk?

Is it only at places like whole foods? And what kind of container does it come in? Does it keep well? thanks

In larger "regular" supermarkets, I usually find it in the Asian or International Foods aisle. It's in a can, about 14 oz., I think. Usually there is coconut milk and coconut cream - the cream is thicker and fattier.

I've never tried to keep it once the can is open. Most of my recipes seem to use up the entire can. I think you could probably transfer leftovers to a jar with a tightly sealing lid, and keep it for a few days. I'm not sure though.

thanks that helps!

It does keep pretty well - I've kept it in the fridge about a week or so - about like you would cow's milk.

Personally, the only coconut cream I've ever seen was in the alcohol aisle, and it contains sugar. I've never seen it in the asian food section.

But you can also make your own coconut milk pretty easily if you have access to dry coconut.

when I don't use the entire can at once, I pour what's left into a small container and freeze it. It freezes and thaws great.

You can buy coconut milk powder in some Asian markets or in larger supermarkets that have a well-stocked "ethnic" aisle. Then you can just mix up as much as you need.

Here they seem to have it in every grocery store. Depending on which store, it's either in the asian/ethnic section or by the baking supplies. There's usually two different kinds of coconut milk - a higher fat one for baking and a lower fat one for cooking (at least that's how they are labelled).

there's also coconut milk beverage made by so delicious. it's a milk substitute and comes in a carton like a half gallon of milk does. I've bought it at wf and kroger (regular grocery store)

Op here, I just bought a can of coconut milk in the "Thai" section and its a solid paste?

Is it solid all the way through or just on top? Sometimes when I open the can there's a solid layer but underneath is liquid. I just stir it all up with a fork.

No - it's more likely just the fat layer. Like cream-top milk, the fat rises and forms a clump. Just stir it up.
