post partum gift basket for the mama

A few of us are getting together tonight to bring our girlfriend (due 1/25) some homecooked meals to freeze as well as a basket of goodies that usually get overlooked at a baby shower. So far our list includes:

a six pack of real hoppy beer
nursing/breast pads to curb leakage
lansinoh/lanolin
few mixed cds of kid friendly music
mother's milk tea
a number of good magazines
a new jade plant (symbolizes friendship, luck, prosperity).

If this isn't your first, I'd love to hear any items/comforts you found essential during the first few weeks postpartum. Tell me!

What a good friend you are! I would love to have someone do this for me!

I would add a healthy snack - like muffins - that she can freeze so she can pop one in the microwave and get something good and healthy fast. I have a great recipe for ones with bananas, peanut butter and chocolate chips. Want it?

(This reminds me of something super tacky my in-laws did when I had my shower with DD: they gave *DH* an "emergency survival kit," with beer and cans of soup and other prepared food HE would need since I would not be cooking for him. Uh. hello? What about the mom? The one who is doing all the work? Can you tell I'm still annoyed by it! )

Ha! I won't even start with all the stuff they've said about co-sleeping, breastfeeding and vegetarian kids.

I call these "Elvis Muffins." They are super good and filling and full of protein and fiber. My kid also loves them.

3 mashed bananas
1 cup flour (you can do 1/2 and 1/2 white and wheat)
1/2 cup wheat germ (if no wheat germ, use 1/2 cup flour instead)
1 cup oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup peanut butter
2 tbs butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Mix dry ingredients in one bowl. Mash bananas and combine with egg, softened butter, peanut butter, vanilla, milk. Add wet to dry and mix just until blended. (Too much mixing and the muffins will be tough.)

Bake in muffin tins (sprayed with Pam or no stick, or using liners) 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.

I'm doing the same for a friend due in February!

Other items I've added are:

-protein rich snack (nuts, trail mix)
-oatmeal
-nursing mother's companion book
-soothies gel pads
-local nursing support info

Maybe you could all go in a gift card for a massage.

This is a great idea. I wish someone would do that for me, but most of my friends don't have kids. Boo. ;-)

Like PP said, small snacks that are quick and easy are a great idea. I'm not really coming up with any original ideas of my own...stupid prego brain strikes again. LOL

For frozen meals, I love lasagna, burritos, enchiladas, beef stew (but since it goes in a bag, I think it isn't as attractive).

And I love the soothies gel things that another mama posted.. I was trying to remember what those were called.. I LOVED them!

Everyone chip in for a massage postpartum that will come to her home...I always encourage around day 3 or 4 postpartum when milk comes in and exhaustion is at it's peek...helps release that tension.

Books... The Baby Book by Dr. Sears, The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears, Ina Mays Guide to Breastfeeding by Ina May Gaskin.

Have fun!

What awesome friends!

I second the healthy snack ideas!

And "Meditations for New Mothers" by Beth Wilson Saavedra is a great little book.
