Nuchal cord? (x-posted)

Hello everybody

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and just had an u/s and the doctor told me that the cord might be around my baby's neck.He said he couldn't tell if it's wrapped or just near, but it was there =/

I was wondering if anyone else had/have similar experience now or in the past pregnancies and if so what was the outcome.
I'm very worried since the baby hasn't stopped moving for more than 24 h now.
Everything else looked fine during the u/s.

Thanks

25% or so of babies have a nuchal cord (some studies actually say more). They're just tucking it away so it doesn't get ahead of them (prolapse) at birth, smart little things. This is one of those big "OMG" moments that doesn't have to be; the cord is almost always plenty long enough to wrap around a baby (including the neck) without causing issues, and in those few cases where it DOES cause issues (RARE!), routine monitoring (intermittent included) will pick them up.

Plus your baby could have gotten rid of the nuchal cord by now, anyway.

Thank you for the replay.
I'm worried coz of her hyperactivity for the last 2 days. She literally don't stop moving and once i was told that it might be sign of cord compression.

My 3rd child was born with a nuchal cord. He tolerated labor beautifully, so well that we didn't even realize that he had the cord around his neck until I pushed him out. (I didn't have any ultrasounds during 3rd trimester, so who knows how long the cord had been that way.) His APGAR's were 8 and 9.

I have a total of 4 ultrasounds at 20 weeks or beyond in my 3 pregnancies ~ Every time the cord has been up by babies neck and/or they have been playing with it with their hands up by their face. Neither was born with a nuchal cord (this baby still in utero) ~ I admit after seeing it up there at 32 weeks with my son (U/S for a low lying placenta follow up) I was worried just like you!!! All of the research I did showed me exactly what the PP said.

If her movement really seems weird to you, don't be afraid to get checked out, but otherwise try to relax and not worry about it

Good luck with your upcoming delivery!!

Both of my children have been born with nuchal cords and in neither case did it present any issue whatsoever in their birth. A cord around the neck is a cord that isn't going to prolapse, and unless the cord is really short, it shouldn't interfere with baby's descent or prevent a normal vaginal delivery.

My son was born with a triple nuchal cord. He did have a bit of a hard time descending, and needed some oxygen after he was born, but he was just fine, and pinked up nearly immediately. After that experience, I am not afraid of nuchal cords at all.

I didn't have any late 3rd trimester ultrasounds, so I didn't know where my daughter's cord was. She was born with it wrapped once around her neck. I had no fetal monitoring during labor (a very quick, accidental unassisted homebirth), but she came out great and pinked right up for 9 apgar initial assessment by my picu nurse mom (who caught baby and unwrapped cord).

Almost all my babies were born with nuchal cords. All were fine.

My 2nd had a nuchal cord x 2, my 3rd had a nuchal cord x 3, and my 4th died at 38 weeks due to a nuchal cord. It's fine 95% of the time, but I always have cause for concern because of my history with this. Not everyone has this kind of experience, but I wanted to be honest with you.

Good Luck mama

ps my 5th didn't have a nuchal cord and did well after birth.

My second baby had a double nuchal cord. We didn't have any u/s so I really don't know how long it was like that. We noticed it after her head was born. It didn't impede her in any way. My midwife was going to unwrap it during the next contraction but the baby flew out anyway. Her apgars were 9 and 9.
