I just saw this on one of my frugal blogs I visit and thought it might interest some of you:
Homemade Gummi Candy
She uses regular Jello, but I think it can be done with plain unflavored gelatin and fruit juice or sub a 'natural' brand of flavored gelatin. This way you can avoid all those icky artificial colors, corn syrup, etc.
And, I think, if done right, it might actually be cost-effective. Compared to cheap-o gummies, probably not. But the more expensive type (like Haribo) or more natural/organic brands, I think so.
Ds is allergic to corn, so this also allows me to make a nice comparable treat (very rare, but still) that will look like 'everyone else's' gummies, but cooler.
And same blog, but how to make ice cream with old coffee cans:
homemade ice cream
I've found these 'frugal' treats made with re-purposed items (old advent calendars, coffee cans) super intriguing. And then I thought, 'wait a moment, I KNOW where all the super frugal ninjas congregate--MDC!!!" I thought you guys might appreciate the links, and prehaps, maybe share a few of your own frugal ninja 'tricks' for making healthy treats on the cheap.
