How much pureed food per day for 6mo old?

DS just started on pureed food on Sunday at 5 1/2 months old. I have been giving him 2ozs 1 or 2 times a day. This is his first food - no cereal. Today he ate the 4oz jar at one sitting.

I have read about BLW but I don't want to go that route. I don't feel like we eat healthy enough to give him our food. I think he is getting much better nutrients from the Earth's Best baby food and a better variety too.

I would love to hear from other mammas who feed pureed food. How much do you feed per sitting? How many times a day? Do you nurse less then?

Thanks!

If you just started solids, I would go slowly with them, doing just one meal a day for a while (a few weeks probably) and gradually adding a second and then 3rd meal. Nurse after every meal and baby will self determine how much he needs to nurse, breast milk is sill the best food for him.

I do Earth's Best with DS as well and we do maybe 2 tbsp a day. DS loves food but it's more for experimentation than nourishment so we mostly nurse. In fact it's been around 5 days since he's had food mainly because he's feeling under the weather and I think nursing is all he needs right now. So I'd start with 1-2 tbsp a day then go from there depending on your little one. Also ds started to get a little stopped up even from that little bit of food so be on the lookout. Peas seemed to be our culprit.

Just a note.. BLW doesn't have to mean that you give your baby the food you're eating.. It means that you start with whole foods like avocado, banana, pear and sweet potato. You can purchase all these things at the store just as easily as baby food. Fresh, whole food is healthier than jarred baby-food, there's no way around it..

My 6mo old will eat anywhere from a teaspoon to 3 oz of pureed food a day, depending on her mood. She MUCH prefers cheerios though, and will eat probably 20-30 a day, with the rest going all over the place.

I would just offer and let your DS decide how much to eat. Takes away a lot of stress.

I give ds (6.5 months old) solids (purees or tiny bites of food) once a day, pretty much. I mix cereal in it so it doesn't fall off the spoon as easily- he likes to try to feed himself. He is totally in control of how much he eats (I don't put the food in his mouth unless he directs my hand to his mouth), and eats less than 1/3 of a jar at a time.

In theory, I try to nurse him before solids. Breastmilk should be the main nutrition at this point, so I wouldn't want him to fill up on solids and get less breastmilk. It doesn't always work in reality that I nurse him before- he won't really nurse unless he's hungry. He's not a big nurser, so I am concerned that eating solids will cut down on how much he nurses.

If you have a dc who nurses a LOT, then you could probably safely give solids before nursing. As long as you are sure it won't really reduce how much they are nursing. My ds1 was like that- there was certainly no worry that he wouldn't nurse enough, no matter how much solids he ate!
