A newborn and a foam matress

I need your advice, mamas. My baby is 10 days old. He sleeps with me and DH in our foam tempurpedic bed, however, I am terrified that one day he may roll over on his tummy and his nose will sink into the foam, and he won't be able to breathe.

I am thinking of getting some sort of hard mattress pad just for his side of the bed and putting it under the sheets. Have any of you ever purchased something like that? Where would I look for it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

When DS was a newborn, I had the same fears. We found a cosleeper at Target, which sat right on top of the bed. I do not recall the brand, but we called it "The Box." We put it between DH and me. It has a firm padded surface (which I covered with a folded receiving blanket) and three sides have a three-inch ridge, supposedly to prevent anyone from rolling out of their spot. It even has a little night light at the head end. We used this until DS grew out of it at about 3 months, at which time we felt more comfortable with him on the mattress surface.

DH was more nervous than I about having DS in bed, so it assured him that DS was safe. And, it was nice when DS had a leaky diaper, because we only needed to wash the blanket and the surface of the pad. Since then, the occasional leak requires a whole change of bedding. Those pee-pee pads are just too crunchy for our comfort.

You baby is probably fine, but if you can do something that allows more peace of mind, I think it's worth it!

We have a tempurpedic too and for both my boys we just used one of those infant sleepers that have those side barriers that prevents them from turning from side to side. I would place that next to me so I could place my baby in there and nurse at the same time. It worked great because it would keep them in one place and prevent them from rolling over onto their bellies.

We're on kid #2 here sleeping on our Tempurpedic=type bed and we've never done anything special. They don't weigh very much so they don't sink into the foam very far.
