Friend's 6mo still spits up, burps, wiggles, rashy, often refuses breast

A friend's 6 month-old ds has a skin rash, still spits-up and burps a lot after feedings, refuses breast during the day (wiggles away from it), but nurses pretty well at night (every three hours). Mama doesn't have an abundant milk supply, in fact she thinks it is low and is considering Fenugreek.

The baby has been spitting up a lot since birth. I wonder what's going on...could he be reacting cow's milk in mama's diet?

What do you breastfeeding mamas think? Any suggestions?

Thanks!!!

It could be dairy in mom's diet. It really could be a lot of things. My daughter reacted that way to citrus-oranges, orange juice, lemonade, tomatoes, too. Also, is mama on any medication? that could affect baby, also. Good luck figuring it out!

Also, fenugreek worked well for me. I suggest the tincture as opposed to powder in pill form. Motherlove's More Milk Plus also worked wonderfully for me.

Unless its a lot of spit up, I wouldn't worry about that.. DS2 is 5 months and still spits up once or twice a day on average. I think spitting up is pretty normal.

My dd was like that as well until I eliminated a lot of common allergenic foods from my diet. Her eczema cleared up within 2 weeks after I went off of dairy and gluten. She is happy to see my breasts during the day and night (used to only feed when she was drowsy). She spits up whenever I have legumes or nuts.
You could try eliminating dairy if you think that is the issue. It can be tough though because you have to look for all the hidden dairy in all the prepared foods that you buy.

good luck!

I agree that eliminating dairy (all sources, obvious and hidden) for at least 2 weeks would be telling.

Why does she think she has a low supply?

It's a good possibility that it's Dairy or some other reaction to what mom is eating. She can try the elimination diet for a few weeks to see if the symptoms fade and then slowly reintroduce foods into her diet to see if the symptoms start up again.

I did the elimination diet with my 1st son and found that he would react to dairy and wheat. Thankfully my 2nd son doesn't appear to have the same issues so I am able to eat whatever I want. I guess it's different for every baby.

BTW, neither one of my boys would spit up on a regular basis. But I do have a girlfriend who also EBF her kids and both would spit up constantly.

My DS had silent reflux (fussy, gassy etc.) from cow/sheep dairy, and got bad eczema from soy. So I say eliminate common allergens- all dairy, soy, gluten, and if he still has it eliminate other items commonly eaten by momma- my DD reacted to tomato, onion, banana and citrus along with cow/sheep milk products. Fortunately goat milk products are fine for both kiddos.

Sounds a lot like my refluxy, dairy sensitive babies. Both had reflux, sensitivity to dairy and soy, and eczema. I had to be dairy free while nursing. The nursing only at night is a classic reflux symptom. If his reflux is bad enough he may need medication like Prevacid. That's what turned things around for my son.
