Preventing Pilling?

I'm wondering if anyone can offer some insight as to why my prefolds and t-fit clover fitteds have started pilling.

I realize it's either just a normal thing that happens or it is because of some aspect of my wash routine.

Right now DS is in quite the assortment of dipes: prefolds, t-fitted clover fitteds, velour clover fitteds, an assortment of covers (most are thirsties or imse vinse organic cotton) and a few small Fuzzi Bunz. I just wash everything together and take out the covers to air dry while I dry everything else in the dryer. I alway make sure that the velcro tabs on the covers are not open before tossing them in the wash.

Does pilling just happen or is it because I am washing so many different fabrics together?

Sounds like its just the fabrics rubbing together, which is going to happen regardless of what they are. If they are still pretty new than they are probably just breaking in. Water quality and detergent may have a effect tho too... I wash everything together and don't have a particular problem with pilling; I think we have great water.
