Anyone else here using the Shettles method?

Hola,

I am new to the boards and I decided to see if I could find any other mommies out there who are trying the Shettles Method like dh and I are. If you don't know what it is yet, it's a natural family planning method to help push the odds in your favor of either a boy or a girl. We have a sweet 2 1/2 year old son, who weaned almost a month ago, and we really want a daughter. Dh wants to stop at 2, but I think 4 would be the perfect # of kids for our family. Anyway, he's been really insistent about stopping at 2 and I told him that I can't picture myself going through life without a daughter. I also definitely want to be pregnant again, so that takes adoption out of the picture. Regardless, we're trying the Shettles method to satisfy both of our desires for our family.

The method is only about 85% effective, so it's not for someone who wouldn't welcome in a baby of the opposite gender. We want at least one more child regardless of gender, so the Shettles Method seemed like a good fit for us.

Are there any other moms out there like me? I've been trying (while BF) for 8 months and I think I'll have more success now that ds is weaned. Is anyone else getting crap about trying to determine the gender of their next kid? Are you doing any of the optional things to help (i.e. diet changes, avoiding orgasm for a girl, taking guafenisin for a boy?)

We used it along with the gender diet to conceive our son (after 2 girls DH was gonna be overwhelmed with estrogen if we didn't at least give it a shot at a boy!). Whether it was coincidence or not, it worked. :-)

although not on purpose, we did a lot of the guidelines for boy (except we did DTD 2 days before O not just day of)

Hi!
DH and I really wanted a girl for our first. I don't know why, and of course we would have heartily welcomed a boy, but it was just something we wanted. So, we did use the shettles method -- but we didn't go too crazy. I charted, used OPK's and we timed BD'ing. We BD'ed I think 3 days in a row, and then didn't BD within 2 days of O.

I didn't do any of the special diet they recommend, and I didn't avoid having an orgasm.

Regardless, we did get our girlie! I was shocked when we found out the gender after 20 weeks. Shocked. Floored. I 100% thought I was having a boy. But Nora is 15 months old now and all girl!

Good luck! Don't let ppl get you down about doing it. Or just keep it b/w you and DH. It's not foolproof anyway, and you've got a chance for a girl even if you did nothing. But I hope you get the daughter you hope for. They indeed are awesome!

Thanks for the support!

Your posts are encouraging. Dh and I are probably making this take longer since we are not having sex less than 2 1/2 days before O. I'm trying to err on the side of caution! I was excited to see a woman at the playground last week with twin girls she'd conceived with the Shettles method. It gives me hope!

I do need to tell people to mind their own business when they are negative about it. I'm just doing what's best for my family, and trying to not only bring peace but balance. I'm not even using fertility treatments (although I am not one of those people who thinks badly of those who do!)

What's most important is that we will welcome a baby of either gender into our family, we're just skewing the odds in favor of the one we'd prefer.

are you waiting 2.5 days before ewcm, or 2.5 days before peak O day? (i've skimmed shettes info online, but haven't read the book yet)

It's 2-3 days before ovulation. Since EWCM can vary from woman to woman it wouldn't be a great way to do it. Some women get EWCM for up to 5 days before where as some only get it the day before ovulation.

Shettles for a girl is to BD often/daily up to 2-3 days before and then not again until you are absolutely sure you are 2 +++days past ovulation.

There are other things he recommends, but that is the part about timing relations.

We did with my last pregnancy to TTC a girl and that's what we got- a girl! She is almost 2 yrs old now! ...We plan to TTC a boy currently and will do the Shettles method again. :-)

I got my ds using shettles I didnt do diet at all just made sure to only DTD the day of O. Good luck to you with your little girl. It is easier to time for a boy than a girl but it is very possible to get a girl.

I have a question for you mamas that are experienced with Shettles method for conceiving girls.

I have a friend that is trying to have a girl (she has two boys) but is also nursing a 3yr old and is not ready to wean. She has erratic periods at this time.

The book says she HAS to wean before trying for a girl. Has anyone had luck with nursing and still using shettles method?

We're TTC #1 and I have read the Shettles book and all the diet information. I haven't gone overboard about it and DH knows what it's all about. There's some of it I just can't get behind (not orgasming for one) not because I don't believe that it's true but because I just don't like the idea!!

I'm having a hard time tracking cycle because up to this point I've really only paid attention to CM and for a girl you really have to be aware when you're getting close to O'ing. My cycles are fairly irregular so we're doing our best. But I'm so antsy for a baby that even if we end up with a boy I'll still be very happy! There's always baby #2 (and 3, and 4....)

segrau- i think dr. shettles says it's 85% effective, but i dont know if his results have been replicated by anyone else- it seems like it should work, given that it is a fact xx sperm live longer and xy sperm are faster, so here's hoping for you! im a little skeptical myself, but i never tried it either. when i was a labor and delivery nurse, a lot of mamas told me they did shettles and it worked, but it might be sort of selective self-reporting, you know what i mean, like the ones it didnt work for, they sort of just put it out of their minds? but maybe it really does work. can't hurt to try, especially if you are young enough that a couple extra months of trying isnt gonna matter. my clock is ticking, plus i've got 3 boys and 1 girl, so i will take whatever i can get!

but as far as telling people to mind their business- girlfriend, why would you even tell anyone you are ttc, let alone trying to gender sway. it's such a private thing, and you know people love to stick their noses all up in other peoples biznaz. if you dont want their input, just dont say anything. i would (and do!) keep that sort of thing under my hat.

good luck!

i was going to post this. i think you are the one who told me about that place.

they say shettles was wrong and that the sperm live the same amount of time etc. they say that the sperm swim differently instead. they being various reports i have read. however the timing see,s to still be the same

i would give that place a look see. they have great info on the diets for gender. i have started switching to a boy diet. they have all the stuff listed.

we did it kinda... i didnt read the book or anything but i heard about the method. no one knew or asked? we would have been happy with either, but dh really wanted one of each (he only wants 2 as well) since we had dd first, the second i knew i was ovulating we hopped on it and got our ds. obviously it could have all been luck

also my cycles are always the same and i was still nursing dd during ttc/pregnancy etc.

We weren't following Shetteles but I can tell you what we did that resulted in DD

pos opk around 2pm, grabbed DH right away to DTD, and then DTD next night around 7pm. And that's it. So I guess the girl spermies were already lying in wait when the egg popped out (per shettles)?

I didn't have any special diet though I read somewhere that women who have regular breakfast with lots of cereal tend (slightly) to have boys - and I was in a skipping breakfast phase when we conceived dd.

DH and I feel the same way, we really want a little girl and can't picture not having one. So we're going to try it, but we're doing the girl diet too. Good luck!!!
