Need help with strange behavior (ASD)

I have a 4 1/2 year old son who has ASD. I think he leans more towards Asperger's. Anyway I need help and I thought someone on here may have some suggestions. Here's my problem...

The Sunday before Christmas my son got sick with a cough and fever. He was very lethargic and didn't want to eat. By Tuesday he still wasn't getting any better so I took him to his ped. She said he had a double ear infection and strep throat (she cultured it). She put him on a strong antibiotic. He began to feel better the next day and finished out his meds 10 days later. Since getting sick his behavior has changed. He wakes up 3+ times a night screaming. Sometimes it is nightmares and I can tell he is awake although hysterical and other times it is night terrors and he is looking straight past me. His t-shirt is wet, not soaked but you can feel moisture, from sweat I guess. During the day he is not listening and acting out. I have never had the behavioral problems I am having with him before as far as deliberately misbehaving and yelling and screaming at me. He is highly emotional during the day and breaks down at the littlest thing.

I don't know if him getting sick is related at all but all I know is before he got sick he slept through the night no problem and was the most well mannered helpful child you could ask for. I know the nightmares and the behavior did start at the same time. His school even has had to have me come pick him up twice since schools been back in from Christmas break. His teacher said he was just wanting to sit in the corner and not interact with the class. She thought he wasn't feeling well but he never developed any physical symptoms of being sick besides the not wantign to particpate. Doctor just thinks it is a case of a 4 year old having nightmares and it will pass but these nightly episodes are horrible. Two nights ago he woke up screaming, "Momma I'm going to die" over and over again. It nearly brought me to tears. It takes 10 minutes or more to get him to calm down and he is hysterical, shaking, screaming, even wet himself once, which he hasn't done in a year.

Has anybody every experienced anything like this? Any ideas suggestions? He hasn't slept through the night since Christmas and it is wearing on him & me.

Did you put him on probiotics after the abx? I know that all of those things are related to a gut flora imbalance in my ASD boy (that and crazy giggling fits and hyeractivity). If I were you I would give him some probiotics, kefir, 24-hour yogurt, or something similar to help restore his gut balance after the antibiotics.

It isn't uncommon to have issues after a big illness. Just getting worn out and run down leaves ANY child struggling to behave in the way we expect them to until their bodies totally recuperate. With an ASD child it takes that much more work (and therefore that much more energy) to deal with the day to day things that can be a challenge.

Good luck and I hope you both get some better sleep soon!

i don't think it is this, but have you ever read anything about P.A.N.D.A.S.? i only mention it because i read something about it briefly a while ago, and it talked about strep. like i said, i don't even remember all the details, but thought i'd throw it out there... hope things get better soon. i agree that probiotics are a fabulous thing both during and after antibiotic therapy!

P.A.N.D.A.S. !!!!!!!!! Although I don't like the experemental treatment at the time *small dose of antibiotic daily, we refused*, it's something to keep in mind. I had strep A LOT, and still get it at least yearly. I am always worse, stimming wise, and behaviors are off, after strep. My dd, who has sensory integration d/o had strep, than scarlet fever, and her behavior deteriorated afterwards. It will eventually and slowly get back to normal. Flaxseed oil prevent this, and helps!!!! 500mg/day. I've seen it work personally.

I agree with the previous posters. Either yeast overgrowth (from the antibiotics) or P.A.N.D.A.S. (from the strep) are possibilities - although I thought P.A.N.D.A.S resulted from UNTREATED strep (I could be wrong). I think both are worth looking into.
I hope things get better for your son.

PANDAS came to my mind, too.

I was thinking PANDAS too but I too was under the impression that it only occurred when the strep was untreated. He took a pretty strong 10 day dose of antibiotics and we started pretty early.

Maybe it is just a result of being out of school for two weeks and Christmas excitement, plus getting sick and that wearing you down for a while. My son is pretty high functioning to the point that I sometimes forget that he even has ASD but then something will occur that will remind why we went for a diagnosis in the first place. This is just probably one of those times I guess. I just hate seeing him having such a hard time.

If the abx injured his gut by destroying his good flora he might be more prone to food reactions because his gut is currently "leaky". Does he have a history of food intolerances? If that rings true at all I would focus heavily on gut-healing measures and maybe pull hard to digest foods for a while while adding lots of probiotics.

I am a mother of a child with PANDAS. Did your child improve in behavior and sleep at all while on antibiotics? Did you go for a follow up strep test 14 days after finishing antibiotics? It could be that your child still has strep.

Go for a follow up strep test (rapid and culture). Your child does not have to have symptoms of strep in order to have strep.
