Amity Elizabeth as a girl's name

Hello,

I'm not due until June but the ultrasound tech said she was 95% certain we were having a girl. Anyway, we aren't getting really serious about names yet, but I've kind of liked the name Amity Elizabeth for a while...what do you think?

I do have a niece with the name "Amara". is the "AM" start too similar? While I'm at it, any thoughts on the name "Aurora?"

Thanks!

Amity reminds me of that horror house Amityville horror house. Not a fan of it, sorry. I don't think the name amara should stop you though. As for Aurora, I like the name but could NEVER do it to my kid as I grew up quite close to Aurora, IL *the hometown of wayne and garth* and just does not have good connections to me.

To me Amity will always make me think of Amity Island- the island town in the movie Jaws.

As far as its similarity to Amara- isn't Amara like Ah-mara and Amity like Am-ity? They sound quite different to me.

I like Amity for its meaning.. there used to be a discussion board called Amity mamas or something like that, but I don't think its around anymore. The Elizabeth part I am not too fond of though..I like a lot of ity names and I don't think they are uber popular..

Unity
Charity
etc

I went to school with an Aurora- so I have a negative connotation for that that most people wouldn't.. but the meaning is gorgeous.

I also live near Aurora and have negative connotations with there that most people would not. Its a pretty meaning though and if you do not live anywhere near Illinois, go for it!

I do not like Amity because as two already said... it has connotations in several horror films (not just jaws and amityville) and while the name is supposed to mean peace, thanks to those films it brings to mind a much different picture.

First thing I thought of was the horror films too and I think most people would have that association.

I think Amity is a really pretty name. I like it a lot. My first, fleeting, association was horror movie, but that passed pretty quick. I wouldn't let that stop me.
Aurora is a beautiful name (and Rory for short is cute) it makes em think of the princess in Disney sleeping beauty.

I don't think the AM start for Amara counts for anything/

Elizabeth is my daughter's name, so clearly i'm in favor of that one

Another vote for Amityville horror.

Find another more fetching name.

Amy
Amara
Anita
Anna

yes to Amityville horror...
and isn't Amara also a horror name? I can think of Samara for sure (the ring?) but I'm pretty sure there's an Amara around, too...
but I really like Amity, Amara and Samara!

I also think of that blown up mosque town in Iraq. Samara is not a pretty nor a nice city.

Amityville Horror for me, too, sorry.

I like both names! One of my sisters is named Amity, as a child she went by Amy and now goes by Amity. My other sisters middle name is Elizabeth I think it's a beautiful classic name! Maybe I'm partial.

I think of Amityville Horror too... but if you really love it that is what is important. I wouldn't let it stand in the way. It drove me nuts the way that dh came up with an association to every single name I suggested for both kids.

Aurora, I am biased because I am pregnant right now and if it is a girl we are naming her Aurora with the nickname Rory. So I give it two thumbs up.

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I am not very pop-culture literate so didn't know about Amityville. It's definitely something to consider. What do you all think of:

Aurelia or Katrina or Caterina? Thanks!

Ditto Amityville Horror. Plus the full name makes me think of Emily Elizabeth, main character in the "Clifford the Bid Red Dog" books.

Aurelia is ok. I'm personally not a fan of Katrina or Caterina. Amity also makes me think Amityville. How about Amelie or Amelia instead?

Katrina = devastation (because of the hurricane) in my mind

aurelia is pretty though!

I actually love Amity Elizabeth....it has a great rhythm, a great rise and fall to it. If you like the sound of Amity, what about Amelie (AH-MAH-lee)? If you wanted to go all-French, you could do Amelie Elisabeth.

I like Katrina, but would avoid it because of the hurricane. What about Katrine? Catrine? Catrin? Or other French-sounding names? Camille? Celeste? Cecile? Corinne?

Honestly, I doubt Amity horror stuff is going to be all that relevant to our children's generation. I wouldn't avoid the name because of it.

I mentioned Amelie above too. That's 2 votes so far! Or something like Amilyn (sounds like Amy-Lynn) even. Or Amelia. Or Aislin. (sound like Ash-Lynn) Those are good "A" names that don't bring to mind horror movies.

I'm not crazy about Katrina or Caterina. They just don't sound pretty to me. I like Cecile a lot.

My daughter is named after a vengeance demon (Anyanka), so I say, if you think the name is pretty (Amity, which IS pretty) go for it. And I agree that the association won't be there for people her age. We mama's may know it, but I don't see the connection being quite so pertinent in the future. Plus, I also go by the argument that someone will always have a negative association and some dumb nickname or way to make fun of EVERY name. So other than naming your kid Clitoris, I think you can pretty much do what you want.
