Carbon Water Filters

My 1.5 year old coffee maker apparently has a carbon water filter that I never knew about, since my ex had purchased it to begin with. I only discovered it the other day when I pulled the manual out to do a thorough cleaning of the machine. Oops! Whe I took the filter out, there were some black spots on it, which I am assuming were mold! Yikes! Do you think this could have made me ill? I drink coffee every morning.

I'm not sure, but don't carbon filters use charcoal? that would be black? I've never seen one, but when I move I am getting a carbon filter for our home water as it filters out chlorine and VOCs.
