When should I worry?

Ok, experienced Mama here, but dealing w/flu and now my dd (11) is running fever (low grade) again.

Flu has been in our house for about a week and a half, for the first to get it, and about a week for the rest. My dd had been fever-free for 3 whole days and then started complaining of a headache (sounds like sinus to me because it's across the front) and is feverish and tired (we were ALL VERY wiped out after this, so the tiredness really isn't what is concerning me) and very snotty and congested cough (wet sounding). Should I assume sinus infection and take her in somewhere (we do not have insurance and have RARELY had to see a dr. for anything at all because of jumping on illness right off the bat and supporting immune systems)?

Right now we've been using echinacea tincture and high doses of vit. c, lots of liquids, etc, and tylenol only if acting miserable. I have goldenseal tincture. Should I use that? Red flags are not going off as in my thinking ER is required. I'm thinking we can still kick it's butt.

A returning fever is often a secondary bacterial infection. Sinus, pneumonia, ear, etc. Do you have a walk-in clinic near you? I don't think it rises to ER at all, but I'd probably want to see a doc.

We have a walk-in several towns away...Sinus is what I'm thinking. Of course our tiny herb store isn't open today either. I have a recipe for a sinus infection kicking tea w/garlic, lemon, grapefruit seed extract, etc...

I'm not good with natural remedies, but I can say that I have kicked a bacterial sinus infection on my on (no meds, just supporting immune system and lots of fluids/moisture/saline in nose). I hope your daughter feels better soon and it's not too serious.

Well, because I can't get the herbs I need for my sinus tea, I went ahead and caved and opted for antibiotics(we do NOT opt for that often!!!!). She is just in so much pain and I want her to get better quick. My neighbor had a completely new, unopened bottle of amoxicillin that they decided not to use recently for one of their kids. She should feel much better by tomorrow. Mama gut said it was right. She has all the signs of infection (fever that returned, horrible headache, pulse is 100 (and she's not dehydrated so it is from infection), and after consulting all my books I'm sure that's what I'm dealing with.

Thanks for the responses, even if just to assure me that it wasn't ER material, lol.

Amoxicillan dosing varies widely by both condition and weight of patient. I would not do what you're doing partly because too little can make resistance and too much would, of course, be harmful. Why not try a natural antibiotic instead? We use Oil of Oregano P73 here for example. Allicin (I think that's the name, Garlic) is another choice.

Believe me, I did not make that choice lightly. The last time I've used antibiotics on ANY of my children was 10 years ago. I live in the country near a small town and my herb store was closed. I have been fighting this illness/supporting immune systems for 2 wks now. I've gone thru 8 heads of garlic!! 2 bottles of echinacea, 2 bottles of vit. c, a bottle of vit. d, and because of major body aches and miserable kids I ended up going thru a whole bottle of Tylenol (again, not our first choice). Even though we've bought stuff twice since we started this, I still ran out. I've used everything that I could think of, and she simply wasn't responding, but getting much worse, very quickly. My neighbor has children my children's ages. They are all w/in months of each other.

I would love to have more info on oil of oregano, if you have some to share.

I just want my poor baby to get better. There's nothing worse than watching your child suffer. I personally suffer from Migraine, and I cannot stand to see my child w/a horrible headache.

You gave your dd your neighbor's medication?

That wasn't a good idea, often there are certain antibiotics recommended for certain things. I understand herbs were not working but you should take our child to the Dr and get their own medication.

If a certain antibiotic doesn't work well for a certain thing then they may have to take additional antibiotics.
