It was the freaking bottles

We had to overcome a myriad of obstacles to nurse. We didn't even latch for 8 weeks. I still have low supply.

When I was EPing, I was put in contact with (a very well respected) IBCLC (two actually, but this one is the only relevant one.) We set up an appointment, but the first thing she told me to do was go buy Avent bottles because they are breastfeeding friendly. So, of course, I do. We put away the Dr. Brown's and use Avents for the last 6 months.

During this time, I nurse through quite a bit of pain. Every.Single.Time. The pain was making me insane with resentment and I hated breastfeeding so much. Countless people looked at the latch - outwardly it looked fine - everyone guessed at the problem, but no one could really tell.

She popped a tooth. It amplified the bad latch - the pain increased tenfold. There was no way breastfeeding could continue. So I broke the trusty pump back out. Avents don't fit the medelas, so I pulled out a Dr. Brown's and pumped into it. Fed her with them for the next couple days until I finally latched her again because I was tired or out or something, I forget.

Minimal pain. Like, not a pleasant experience, but only mildly uncomfortable. A hundred times better than before the tooth. Since then I have used the DBs for her supplement (she gets two bottles a day), and nursing is (comparatively) a dream!

The Avents may have a wider base, but that doesn't mean she has to take them correctly. She rarely flanges her lips on them and god knows what she's doing with her tongue and teeth. She doesn't really take in any of the bulb. The DBs, though smaller, she takes them in all the way and flanges her lips perfectly, probably coming much closer to a natural latch.

Six months of breastfeeding hell, and it was the mother$%^&$#@ bottles. Part of me says .
But the rest of me is We might just make it to a year after all!

Wow! Sorry you had such a difficult 6 months. Thank goodness you found out the issue! Not all bottles work for all babies. It's such a experiment to find the right one! My LO would only take the NUK bottles. It took months to get her take it at all.

You poor thing.

and yet

You might want to contact that IBCLC and let her know. In a very nice way of course. So that she doesn't continue to recommend those bottles unreservedly to other unsuspecting mamas.

I will for sure! She has always made it clear she appreciates feedback on how things go with her suggestions. I just have to figure out how to word it. She did give us a great deal of time and (good) help and I don't want to come across as anything but nice. I'll probably compose it in the morning.

We were also told that avents (and the like) were the best, and that dr. browns were the 'kiss of death' for breastfeeding.

We ended up going with the breast flow bottles. He can't get the milk out unless he's latched on properly, so it works for us.

Wow, good for you for sticking it out with the pain! I'm glad you found a solution I'm beginning to think that a "natural" shaped nipple isn't the way to go. DS has problems with the wide mouth bottles. He uses Dr. Brown's, and we've never had a problem.

I really think it is a case of finding what brand works for you, and that the Avent bottles are not always going to be a problem. Our DS1 had an extremely painful latch that burned like fire every time I nursed him....nothing improved it, until we introduced bottles at six weeks - Avent bottles - because I was returning to work - and learning to suckle the Avent bottles finally improved his latch so that it didn't hurt anymore.

OP, you did so great to stick it out even though it hurt. I am glad things are less painful now !

I never said they were. The thread's not titled, "Avent is evil" or anything. But to recommend them exclusively to every nursing mom seems like a bad idea, especially based on my experience.

ITA ! They definitely should not be presented as the magic bottle that's going to always work. I think better advice from an LC would be to try several and see what works out best.

I have used Avent bottles historically and never had latch problems, of course my kids were never routinely given bottles, so that might have had something to do with it.

This new bub of mine is going to need bottles routinely because I have to go back to work sooner so I have been researching which bottles/nipples to use and came across this article:

http://="http://www.lowmilksupply.or...s.shtml"<br />

Apparently Avent are not the greatest for breastfed babies, which I never knew. Actually I always believed the hype about the 'orthodontic nipple' being better for BF babies, but turns out that is not exactly true, either. But obviously there are babies who do fine on all these bottles, so it really is about finding what works for your little one. My baby is doing fine on the NaturaLatch nipple...so far, lol.

OP I just want to tell you how thoroughly impressed I am that you stuck with it through all that. I have never FF any of my kids, but faced with what you were dealing with, I might have. Good for you!!!!

Baby refuses bottle

Hi everyone, maybe there's a thread about this already, but I need help! My baby is 3 mo old and I return to work when she will be 4 mo old. She is refusing every bottle under the sun! Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you.
Have someone besides yourself attempt the bottle, and you should leave the house while this is going on. Some babies know when mama is near, and will hold out to nurse instead. You may need to try going out 3-4 times before your baby will accept a bottle or at least without much fuss. I believe that most babies whose moms WOH will accept a bottle when they know mom is not around. This was true for our DS1. He was extremely resistant to any bottles at home, whether I was there or not, but when he was at daycare, he knew I was not there and took them without issue.

Have you tried the breast flow? My ds will take that one. Also, I some times use the medela nipple and just 'play' with DS (squirt/drip milk into his mouth). Finally, DS is 3.5 months, and DH can feed him with a spoon, slowly.
Cup feeding and spoon feeding (as the pp has mentioned) are both alternatives you might like to consider.
This article describes how several parents have approached this challenge:

Good luck!

My DS hated the wider based nipples like breastflow too. The ones we had the most luck with were actually the super cheap gerber ones that you can get at Target, 3 for $3. The bottles fit perfectly with a Medela pump too

I am very happy for you, Kellie! I give you such credit for sticking with this! My 1st had latch/nursing problems for 2 +weeks when he was born and I thought I had it bad!

I remember "they" always used to recommend those playtex nursers with the inverted nipple assuming baby would pull the whole thing into their mouth but most just sucked on the tip.

I agree about trying different kinds of nipples if one isn't working. It's too bad you found out the hard way!

The worst thing is I didn't know they weren't working! I thought they were working great. She was bottle fed for 8 weeks, with me trying to latch her here and there. Terrible, terrible biting latch. Then at 8 weeks she turned a corner and we could nurse (although still with considerable pain). It never occured to me that the pain was coming from the bottles - since her latch has been so bad since the beginning.

Oranges, we had a hard time getting my dd to take a bottle too. What FINALLY worked, despite everyone's advice was for ME to teach her to take the bottle. Once she was comfortable with it with me alone, then we were able to get dh to give it to her.

Sk8termaiden, I'm so glad you figured that out! What a pain (literally!).
