How to find understanding MW with my insurance?

I had gestational diabetes with my last (so I'm assuming I'm high risk). Anyway, I am currently with an OB practice that won't bend the rules on the 3 hr gtt I want to refuse. I am willing to test my sugar 8 times a day if I have to in order to avoid the test but I'm getting ready to be "fired" from the practice.
HOW do I find a MW that understands patient concerns with a popular health insurance?

Can I ask why you object so strongly to the 3 hr gtt?

Well, I was diagnosed with GD with my last pregnancy (diet controlled) so me failing the 1 hour is no surprise. I don't see the need to go through the 3 hrs to find out the same thing I know (and yes I know the 1 hour is highly inaccurate). The one hr is 50 grams of sugar +artificial colors you drink in 5 min while the 3 hr test is 100 grams of sugar + artificial colors in 5 min. I don't feel comfortable doing a test with that much sugar with my history. People with GD have a higher risk for fetal demise when blood sugars are not controlled. Taking in 100 grams in 5 minutes is not beneficial to me or the baby for the sake of a diagnosis in MY opinion. I would rather continue my healthy diet, see a nutritionist and keep tabs on my sugar levels at home throughout the day.

The general rule is once you have GD, you will always have GD. I am surprised they didn't want to test you early on in your pregnancy, instead of the normal time line for it. Most of those I know who had GD in a previous pregnancy are tested around I think the 12-18 week mark, and if that one is negative, then again at the 28 week mark.

I would just honestly tell them, since you already know your 3 hour test will come back positive, based upon your previous pregnancy, that you would rather just do the referral now and get started on the diet and monitoring.

Ah. So you think you for sure have it, so why mess with an extra test with yucky stuff to mess up your body. Makes sense.

I totally agree with you on the 3-hour test. I had GD in both of my previous pg and was and was trying to figure out if I could refuse the 3-hour test this time. Seemed to me that you should be able to if you already know the drill and are willing to test and manage your blood sugar regularly. Amazingly enough, it turns out I don't have GD this time, but I wasn't really able to find any good answers to my questions about refusing the test. I'm not sure about midwives and insurance. My midwives work through a hospital, so they take regular insurance. What about a birthing center? Do you have any of those around? You could try asking on the individual state message boards and see if anyone knows of a good one for you.
