Rainy Day Family Activities?

I should have planned ahead, but DH has off work today and the weather is windy and rainy, so outdoor activities are out. But we're looking for some family activities we can do today. We only have DS, 2 1/2 and we live in a small town with no malls or other indoor places to go "play". Normally we would go on a hike or something.

Any suggestions? What does your family do for fun on special days?

Hi! We're in Northern CA too! My DD is also 2.5 and we're experiencing the same storm system.

First, we try not to let rain keep us in all day. Do you guys have rain gear? If so, bundle up and you can still take a walk! Don't go too far and you can come right home and change if anyone gets too wet. Or go for a drive and get out at different places and see how the rain affects things. Then get back into the nice warm car and head somewhere else. Don't let the cold and rain stop you! We went to the ocean and redwoods yesterday!

Since you're in the Sierra Foothills(at least that's what your info says), there's bound to be some creeks or brooks semi-close to you. Rain like this is a good opportunity to see how full they get. And leaf races are fun too! Drop two leaves in and see who's goes faster/further/slower/spins/sinks etc.

For indoor stuff, we try to rotate a quiet, keeping still type activity with something movement related. So maybe DD will color for a bit and then we do some freeze dancing. Or we'll sit and build something with her blocks and then build a big fort with cushions and blankets that can be crawled in or jumped on.

Rainy days are good days for floor picnics, buttery popcorn, hot chocolate and making cookies. Even homemade pizzas can be fun, a learning experience and a time filler!

We're working on a Valentine's wreath today. I've cut out some construction paper hearts in varying colors and sizes and DD is gluing them to a paper plate that the center has been cut out. Once she's covered it with the hearts, she can put stickers or glitter or bead or color on it and then I'll tie a ribbon and hang it for her.

Great ideas! Unfortunately DH convinced us to go "into town" to go shopping instead. Sigh. But maybe DS and I will bundle up and go to the creek today with his rain boots. He would love it! And then come home to hot chocolate and valentine's crafts. Thanks for your great ideas! It sounds like we're in for a couple more waves of this looooong storm. At least it's not snow and ice!

This is some storm, huh? I'm glad you've avoided ice and snow, so far. Where do you live?

Have fun playing in the rain today!!

Our rainy day activities are building forts, reading, watching a movie together and def baking and cooking in the kitchen. DS loves to help in the kitchen, especially with bread. He loves to watch it at different stages rising and then baking it and of course--eating it! Lots of cuddle time goes into days spent at home. Sometimes they can be a blessing in disguise.

Indoor picnics, face/body art (with washable markers), special movie (don't know how old your ds is), bake a cake together.

We're about an hour southeast of Sacramento, just on the edge of the foothills but not high enough up to get any snow. The power went out for awhile today and DS kept asking to do things that used electricity...he didn't understand, of course! But we had fun hiding under blankets and doing valentine craft projects. I'll be glad for some sunny weather again though!!!

I live in Vancouver so almost everyday is a rainy day here! Honestly? We go outside anyway every single day. Even just an hour can help with cabin fever. I put my daughter in a one-piece rain suit and rubber boots and we go looking for puddles. Then we get sticks and use them to splash the puddles. And when we can find them we get rocks to throw in the puddles. It's a blast. But then, I'm a big fan of the saying, "There's no bad weather, only bad clothing." Make sure you're dressed for it, too. Puddle jumping is way more fun if it's a family activity. I splurged on fantastic rain boots this year (worth it since I wear them all the time) and a good rain coat and winter is much more fun because of it.

For indoor activities we have a craft bag that we pull out on special days with feathers (we got a big bag of them at an art store) pom poms, and little pieces of paper (I cut up our Christmas wrapping paper into little pieces) and we glue them to paper or paper plates. If I'm feeling adventurous I'll break out the glitter. Cooking and baking is fun, too, if you have the ingredients on hand. My husband has built my daughter a few forts with blankets and pillows and that's been a big hit.

If it's still raining I hope that helps! When I moved here the gloomy, rainy days really got me down. Since I've learned to embrace them it's been so much better. Have fun!
